Zone Control Set up

Hello.

So briefly my set up, Worchester cdi 40 classic, Tado x wireless receiver controlling hot water (to a tank), two zones each controlled by a Tado x wired thermostat. Then I have been adding Tado x TRVs and some wireless thermostats for more accurate temperature control per room.

I was wondering why to make it all work I need to set my zone control on each room as wired thermostat and wireless receiver? So for example main bedroom is set to the upstairs wired thermostat (which opens and closes the valve), and then the wireless receiver to actually get the boiler firing.

It was professionally installed and my electrician confirmed that all the wiring was correct.

  • I presume you have motorised zone valves for each central heating zone

Are there two? Are they both wired to existing thermostats? Now those zone valves control the flow of heat into the relevant zone. If you want to save the trouble of having a wired thermostat thats possible. The most reliable way is to replace a zone valve with an automatic bypass valve. There is another way, which is to force the valve open by hot wiring its motor (your sparkie will know how thats done) and then it wont have to participate. However an automatic bypass valve will save you money by shutting things down when no radiators on its circuit are calling for heat.

How many radiators do you have in total, upstairs and, seperately, downstairs? If you have TRVs and Under 6 radiators are involved in each zone, you have a strong case for removal of the zone valve and replacement with an automatic bypass valve.
