Altantic Boiller and Tado wiring

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of replacing my old thermostat with a wired Tado V3, but I'm running into an issue. The old thermostat had just two wires connected to it, and following the manual instructions, I connected these to the + and - terminals on the Tado (on the right-hand side) and set the correct settings (D62).

However, with this wiring, the heating stays constantly on, regardless of what temperature I set on the thermostat or whether I try to turn it off.

My questions are:

  1. Is connecting the wires to + and - the correct way to wire it up for my setup?
  2. Do I need to adjust the wiring on the boiler itself to enable OpenTherm or any other settings?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi please give us the exact model of the boiler, and identify the Tado parts you are attempting to configure.
  • Helloc@policywonk

The name of the boiler is Ideal Atlantic 24 Combi and I am connecting the Wired Smart Thermostat Tado v3 to it.

I'm connecting the wires to minus and plus. however on some forums I see that I should have connected it to COM and NO, however the heating doesn't work in this case at all.

So essentially, the heating is either constantly switched on (+ and - Connect) or off (COM and NO connect).

    Appreciate your help in advance.

  • hey @policywonk I'm wondering if you can guide me with my problem. I've read a few forums related to other boiler, do I need to connect the thermostat to Open Therm Connectors on the boilder?

  • Sorry, havent responded, been tied up.

Now looking at this: Ideal-Atlantic-Install-Guide.pdf - the installation guide for your boiler on Page 31-32, there is a chocolate wiring strip, with four pairs- with violet and black wires on one side. These connect to Opentherm. Your wired smart thermostat cable should go into those nodes.

Trace the cable back to your thermostat ,

    • route the wire which connects to the violet node into -,
    • route the wire from the black node to +
    • (oddly they dont usually matter which way around) - but definately do not wire anything to the COM/NO pair.

The drawings should be clear enough. However if this presents a problem come back. Take photos of whats confusing, post them here (use a laptop browser, not a mobile phone, and you can upload the pics)- and we'll think with you.
