Radiator balancing

  • The contributions here have been a real help. By following the various recommendations I have discovered an unexpected issue with one problem (vertical) rad: the hot water flow enters via the lock valve side and exits via the tado TRV. This radiator never seemed to heat, or at least very slowly. I have now opened the lock valve and it is heating quickly.
Thoughts on whether I can just leave open the lock valve wide and let the tado manage the flow?
(This particular radiator is toward the end of one of the 'spurs' so I am hoping won't have a detrimental effect on the boiler.)

  • @JayC Once the system is balanced you should leave the lockshields alone, unless you make further changes to the system such as adding a radiator or resizing a radiator.

If the radiator in question is right at the far end of the pipework then it is probably ok to leave it wide open. But if there are radiators beyond that one then you probably need to close the lockshield down a bit. Otherwise it will short circuit and starve the remaining radiators of the flow rate they used to enjoy.

Flow rate can vary quite a lot with only small adjustments of the lockshield, so maybe close it again and open it up by one full turn rather than all the way. See how things go and adjust from there.
