Has anyone found 'early start' worth persevering with?
Hi,
Day 4 of our tado system up and running here. A few teething problems but so far OK.
I've done some forum searching now and see the 'early start' function does not get a lot of love! So far the rooms I've had early start activated on (I've followed advice is earlier threads and not used it in smaller rooms - only in larger spaces with both Smart TRV and a wireless thermostat) have got up to temperature at least an hour earlier than requested.
Does anyone have any good news stories about this feature. Is the algorithm actually adaptive - i.e. does it begin to learn that room x takes y number of hours to get up to temp if the overnight temp was y? Or is from experience pretty dumb and just keep on making the same mistakes?
I guess the workaround is to push the time you want the room up to temperature by. But that feels like a right bodge.
Thanks

I've turned the feature off.
I've got Warm Air heating and the house heats up VERY quickly, I don't think the Tado could comprehend that and as others have said it was turning on FAR too early.
I'm sure I gave it a few days (maybe a week) to see if it started to learn how quickly the house heated, but it didn't get better.
Thinking aloud, it massively overshoots the target temperature first thing in the morning, so I'm going to try a lower temperature setting for the first 30-minutes. 🤓
On a similar topic, I've set the Away Schedule "Preheat Before Arrival" feature to "Off", so it turns on when I'm almost home, not when I'm out walking a mile or so away!!

Here in the Netherlands the same experience. Early start started 5 hours early. We turned it off.

Jup, it's a horribly implemented feature: too aggressive for my radiator-heated rooms, not aggressive enough for my floor-heated living room.

I emailed tado about this and below is their reply. This is the first I’ve heard about it only being for “very slow systems”. This doesn’t seem to be mentioned in tado’s marketing or support articles...
Thank you for your message.
Early Start is intended to compensate very slow systems only, underfloor heating mainly. Radiators are not slow systems. We advise you to disable Early Start for any zone with Smart Radiator Thermostats installed.
As a workaround, you can set the time blocks of the Smart Schedule 5-10 minutes earlier and it will do the trick.

Thanks Adam j. This is where tado really falls down. Nowhere in any documents I received did it say early start is only for slow start systems like underfloor. Even on the tado shop it doesn't show you that specs and suggested uses of any equipment. You have to go to Amazon to get details2

Yes, it is hogwash. The early start should use information about the system gathered over time, combined with the current room temperature, desired temperature, and possibly outside temperature to calculate how long before the schedule it should start heating.
It is *very unlikely* that that would come out as 5 hours in a reasonably designed heating installation. It should be more like 30 minutes to an hour, when it is cold outside as it is now. When it takes 5 hours to heat the room from idle (cool down during the night) the heating is under-performing.

Last week I had this message from support to a query on how their learning compares with Nest:
"We have this feature, its called "early start".
But I have to warn you, the feature is a little bugged right now. We are probably going to fix the feature in the next 1-2 years."
Not what I was hoping, but was grateful for the honest answer.

Good to hear a 'proper' honest answer. But 1-2 years.......not really good enough.
If that timescale is real the current earlystart should really be renamed 'underfloor start' or something and mention of it in the marketing needs removing. It is borderline mis selling currently.

1-2 years, I mean come on they are all over the internet talking about their insight led technical capability. Yet, they cannot implement something that Evohome does within the controller, and has done for years.
What’s the point of their centralised model (sorry “cloud”) and their secret source AI if it can’t look back at previous days with similar ambient temperatures and work out an x-y degree increase to z level of time.
They’ve got Eon flogging their equipment now so need to unlock the purse strings and get some proper R&D and investment in their core product.
If the early start is just a glorified egg timer, then it should be called out within the app to say only suitable for x systems.
Sorry for the winging2 -
Agree this is very misleading description of early start in the marketing material. Disappointing. Hope the early start feature can quickly be added to live up to what was promised! (Currently turns on 5 hours early for large room with radiator, based on what I can’t imagine as room only takes 30mins to 1 hour to heat).0

Anyone can share recent experience with early start feature? Do you know if the feature is “fixed”? Thanks0

It wasn’t any different last time I tried it, in may. You get more options if you pay the monthly subscription though, which I don’t have.0

Apart early start does tado do any learning at all? Like to know how long it takes for a room to heat up?
When I had my nest if I said I want the house at 20 at 08:00 it would start at varying times based on the current room and outside temperature, so it was really nice as I didn't need to worry when to start the heating it would always know when to start heading so I get the temperature I wanted at the desired time.0 -
@Mariusmssj if I may ask, why did you give up Nest?0
-
Early start, 30mins late at least. Hive is no better.

Early start used to work when I first had the Tado. It was generally more on time. The v3 thermostat I have now is all over the place. I leave early start on but it is often poor. I assume start of time can be 30 minutes either way. Or there will be the random starting an hour too early for no reason and then it's daft hot.

@hugbilly well it's the lack of support for smart TRV's mainly. Most other features worked really well on the nest and the coming on really worked accurately almost every time.
I'm having hard time believing that Tado doesn't adjust or learn because having a schedule means nothing if you don't take into account the weather outside and current temperature0 -
Tado has weather compensation and is a PID system, so it does adjust. Don’t know whether that includes early start though.0

@johnnyp78 I'm curious how it works, as so far with early start off it follows the schedule to the second.
I've tried early start but it's shockingly bad. I wanted the living room at 20C at 9 in the morning, what it did was turn itself on at 6 hit 20 by 7 and then was just idling for 2 hours at 20, that is clearly broken.
Weather compensation & PID I assume are only used for boiler modulation so it decides at what power the boiler should be going at.
So far if with early start being of I don't think it does any learning whatsoever which is rather disappointing0 -

I do see your point but their project like the smart TRV's are for radiators, and I just can't see why it could not adjust.

Just stumbled upon this thread when I noticed rads "heating to 21°" on the app that weren't due to come on for another 8 hours!!!!! Took me a moment to figure out what the hell was happening but have been through all room schedules and turned off early start. No wonder my heating bill is extortionate! And it was just by chance that I had a look at the app and noticed that heating was on because it's a room that's closed off from morning til evening and therefore doesn't need daytime heat, nor indeed has anyone going in to notice that the radiator is on 🤦♀️
So still, it's pants0 -
@Missfitz Yep, I tried this setting after installing tado and found heating set for 7am coming on at 2 or 3am in the morning. I went through a sh*tload of oil over a number of weeks before I figured out it was "early start" - grrr tado.
Turned them all off and manually set for 30 mins prior to when I ned the room at temperature.
I read elsewhere on the forums that early start is for underfloor heating - if that's the use case why don't tado clearly state that?!

Early start works well for me when the room is already set to a schedule a few degrees below the next schedule’s target temperature. For example, going from 16 to 18. Tado calls for heat in that room about 20 mins earlier. I haven’t tried it going from a room that’s set to off - perhaps this is when it wildly overestimates the time needed.1
-
Early start doesn't appear to have any learning built in, either your lucky it works or its wildly out.
If you persevere with support and get through to someone willing to alter on 2nd line support they can reconfigure this to some extent. Unfortunately you will likely get the stock answer that early start is not suitable for radiators rather than invest the time to configure the system manually.
Quite why they don't surface any of these hidden parameters to us from some sort of advanced settings page is beyond me. It would allow some level of self-service to improve matters rather than bothering support who are obviously advised to not bother spending time on such things.
Once configured correctly it works great starting appropriately depending on room temperature and also external weather factor to decide when best to start.
However I find it best to request the general heating pattern is configured to avoid wild overshoot or less likely undershoot before altering early start.
Additionally, it's best to check before any of the above the overall system is well balanced otherwise behaviour of the radiator can radically be affected by what other radiators trvs are doing which further complicates matters unnecessarily.2 -
Early start works well for me too.

It's too much bother to faff about with timer schedules so much so I have left early start on for the main house thermostat. That is generally ok and seems to be less awful at the moment than it has been.
I have two SRTS. One has early start on and the other has it set to off. Neither can call for heat so that reduces the weirdness.
Check the over night temperature graphs as if the temperature falls quite quickly then it can trigger early start too early as it thinks the temperature is going to fall very low. I tend to set mine so that in the coldest weather it is dropping down to the on point about when early start should kick in so that also reduces the excessive early heating.
The SRTs inaccurate temperature readings don't help either as they will read the room much warmer than it is so when the weather is cold they will think the temperature is dropping faster than it is and that oftens set early start off way too early.
Early start should be clever but most of the time it seems a bit thick unfortunately.
