Can't remove wall stat X from mounting plate

I wanted to reset a wall stat today by removing the batteries and could not removed it from the backplate. It unclips at the bottom ok but will not come away at the top. I have four and they are all the same. It seems as if I apply any more force it will break.

Has anyone experienced this and found a solution? Is there a special technique to this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Edit: Solved, need to pull it forward from the top, not the bottom. The opposite if V3.
