Intermittent Connection Issues with Tado X Thermostats - Apple TV Border Router

Setup Details:

  • 3 Tado X Thermostats
  • 4 Tado X Radiator Thermostats
  • 2 Apple TVs acting as Thread border routers

Issue Description:

  1. Initial Connection Problems:
    • Despite successful initial setup, thermostats show as "disconnected" in the app
    • Temporary fix achieved through factory reset and reconnection process
  2. Ongoing Connectivity Issues:
    • Thermostats randomly lose connection within 24 hours
    • Disconnections occur independently (not all devices at once)
    • Factory resetting thermostats no longer resolves the issue - reconnection process in app (seemingly) completes successfully but thermostats still show as disconnected

Current Workaround:

Power cycling both Apple TVs temporarily restores connectivity to all thermostats, but the issue inevitably returns.

I'm talking to Tado support but without resolution so far, so wondering if anyone here has experienced similar issues or might have insights into potential solutions. Has anyone found a fix for this type of Thread network instability with Tado devices?

  • I have the same issue but using Tado as the border router so perhaps the Apple TV border router is not part of the problem.

    Setup:
    - Wireless Smart Thermostat X - Starter Kit incl. Programmer with Hot Water Control (used as border router)
    - x5 Tado radiator thermostats

I have only had it installed a few days but about once a day one of the valves disconnects. I have found disconnecting the battery and reconnecting gets round the issue.

    Any ideas anyone?
  • Same problem. Only had the system about a week and it doesnt seem to be stable. Frequent disconnects, not always the same devices. I assume this evening’s disconnection was before the app picked it up because the heating didn't kick in according to schedule, despite the app telling me it was heating. Devices do reconnect if I leave them. No solution but the unreliability isn't good enough and will have to return if it doesn’t improve.

I have an Apple TV as the hub, two wired x thermostats (one controlling underfloor heating) and five x radiator valves (six if one didn’t have a faulty battery).
  • Same problem. Losing connection.

2x Apple TV Border Router, 6 HomePod mini’s.

Does not matter if you also use the Tado router, as Matter/Threads dynamically directs traffic over the several routers.

There is some discussion on using third party Thread Border Routers in place of Tado X Bridge. They are in the help or support pages links. Did you have a quick butchers at my draft Tado X installation guide? You will see my setup and what works for … and it started with some prep (to make sure that your router is enabled etc for Thread use), once the prep is finished (I would urge you not to skip any stages) … or blindly tick yes to confirm during installing …

  • Update on this - I got the tado bridge and it’s worked perfectly ever since.
  • Mine no longer disconnects, but I can’t get it to connect to HomeKit properly. Do you know if the Tado bridge solves that too?
  • I didn’t end up adding it to HomeKit so not sure

I have set my Tado to Homekit on my iPad, left it with Tado App (for GeoFencing) on my iPhone; accepting that this will mildly affect Tado X units battery life.
