Guide for replacing faulty Tado wired smart thermostat with a new one?

I've 2x Tado wired smart thermostats (upstairs and downstairs heating) and 1x extension bridge (for hot water)

The downstairs smart thermostat went offline a few days ago and won't come back.

It controls heating downstairs and the hot water via an extension bridge.

Tried all the usual re-pairing, moving the bridge beside it etc to no avail. It's around 6-7 years old so looks to be faulty.

So I bought a new one.

I can swap them out physically no problem (just like changing the battery: unscrew the bottom, take the face off and put the new front face one on).

But is there anyway to do an edit on the tado app to do the replacement by just changing the serial number around keep all the original settings?

I really don't want to delete the old one as honestly it's so long since I set up the connection to the bridge for the hot water, then all the schedules in the tado app, not to mention all the amazon alexa skills to call for heat and hot water.

It would be so much easier to tap a button in the app to "replace faulty device with new" and enter a new serial number.

Any help?

Add the new thermostat to the same 'room' as the old one, and it will use the same schedule as the old one. Then you can delete the old one from the app

  • I tried my best but couldn't figure out how to add the new stat to the existing "downstairs room". When I added the new stat it automatically created a new "room 3".

In the end I just deleted the old stat which in turn deleted the "downstairs" room.

I renamed the new "room 3" to "downstairs" and set everything up again over an hour or two: 1. the schedule, 2. the manual control settings, 3. the zone controller, 4. the amazon alexa skill

The last thing to do is to add this stat to the hot water controls. No idea on how to do that but I've had enough for the night and at least the rads downstairs are working again.

I'm an idiot. Still can't figure out how to add this replacement smart thermostat to control the hot water.

To make matters worse, it looks like the extension kit alone doesn't turn on the hot water via the app even though the extension kit is the one connected to the hot water wiring - Hot water is showing as "on" in the app but there is no hot water.

It looks like the extension kit needs to join to a smart thermostat but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.
