Tado X via Matter - system topology differs between Tado app and Matter controllers

Hi!
I installed Tado X devices recently and noticed one fundamental flaw.
In Tado app the topology follows the former "room" concept. There are 2 significant downgrades however in comparison to the legacy systems:
- it is not possible to set which device is used to measure room temperature (in the past it was possible to select any device in the room - not it defaults to the temperature sensor, if present, or a random radiator thermostat, if more than one).
- it is not possoble to have more than one temperature sensors (or wired thermostat and temperature sensor[s]) in the same room.

However when exposed to Matter controllers, each device is treated individually.
The major issue is that Wireless Temperature Sensors are exposed as... sensors - and therefore "read only" devices. It makes Tado X useless for setups where there is more than one Smart Radiator Thermostat (whilst all TRVs will "sync", the temperature measurement will be taken from the device originally selected to call for heat). It is also pointless for situations where due to the awkward positioning of the TRV, the Temperature Sensor must be used, as the device cannot be controlled via Matter.

I tried to seek assistance from the Support but the answers so far weren't helpful. It is a major blow to everyone who wanted to upgrade the legacy systems.

  • Hello!

I’m curious in upgrading. Has this been fixed

I have 2 rooms where I have two TRV and one room where I have a thermostat and a wireless sensor.

If what you observe is right, TadoX will royally not be functioning well for my system.

Based on what you wrote, in X I cannot have two TRV in the same room or am I misunderstanding something?
  • I think I understand more now what you wrote elsewhere.

The difference is that you can do multiple TRV/sensors within the Tado app but not with Matter. But what do you mean via Matter? What are you using?

You can still have multiple TRVs via Matter, but unlike the legacy systems where you selected which device measures the temperature for the room, in Tado X each device works independently in Matter scenario. In the app, the Wireless Sensor or Thermostat will be automatically used as a device that reports temperature for the room. As Tado said, with the newly manufactured temperature sensors, they will be exposed to Matter as thermostats (rather than sensors) so that's basically the solution for the problem.

In your case though- where you have a room with wired thermostat and wireless sensor I don't think X allows it - you can have multiple TRVs but only one of Thermostat or Wireless sensor.
  • Does it mean that I can have this cofiguration with Tado X?:

    • 2 TRV
    • one wireless sensor (this is the one which control the temperature in the app)

Is this correct? in the V3 sytem I have in this way, the wireless sensor manages the temperature of the room.

PS: my system is central heating without a thermostat at home

Yes, you can. After you set it up in the app then you only expose the sensor to other Matter controlers (e.g. you don't expose the individual TRVs). Just make sure you get the temperature sensor from the new batch - that is exposed as thermostat in Matter ecosystem.
  • thanks a lot.

I will buy from tado, then I am expecting to receive the new batch…

Apparently everything manufactured after August is the "new" one - but I am sure that the support would be willing to exchange them.
  • How do I know if I have a new one? I purchased it recently, but it is not being exposed as a thermostat through Matter. Does that mean that it is an old one? Or do the new ones still need a firmware upgrade?

Then probably it's an old one. Best if someone from Tado confirms. From what I previously understood the OTA upgrade won't fix it.
  • I bought my wireless sensor last week, but I am facing the same issue. What your saying here is basically that you believe this is a hardware issue? In that case I'll get in touch with support.

That's correct. You should ask them to assist you.

Thanks @K_T for encouraging others in the thread to contact support.

Indeed, if anyone in unsure of which version they have, our support team can now troubleshoot the problem remotely.

To start a chat with tado° support, click on the chat box at the bottom right of your screen.

  • @Emcee, If I order today on the Tado website, I will get the new version for sure?

  • Hi @Maarten_CH

I can't say anything with 100% certainty (I don't manage shipment and don't have access to that kind of information), but it is very likely you would receive the newest version. Even if it is not the case, our support can still troubleshoot limitations associated with the older version.

@Emcee - I've contacted support and aside from being told there is a software bug in the firmware, also that these devices are also manufacture in July

"That's correct about the Matter certification but this is not related to the current issue where the Sensor X is not syncing with Apple Home. Some Sensor X's produced before August had a Matter sensor certification that limited the functionality of the sensor in third party platforms like not being able to set a temperature. In your case, it's related to the current firmware, as an older firmware shows that the Sensor X is working. If you like, can I ask for a firmware downgrade so that Sensor X will work properly with Apple Home until our developers release a permanent fix in a new firmware release"

As for replacing them with devices manufactured AFTER August, I received the following:

    "
We are sending you one Smart Thermostat Wired to replace the two Wireless Temperature Sensors. We're glad to inform you that we’re shipping you a new device to replace your damaged device"

This makes no sense to me at all, aside from the cost differential. My boiler is controlled with the Wireless Receiver X. I have 2x Wireless Temperature Sensors to control 2 different areas/zones. This cannot be done using a single wired Thermostat. Previously using V3+, this same setup worked without any issue. I'm now at a loss as to what Tado Support is trying to achieve as this certainly doesn't address the issue. Seems that the Tado X products have been released well before they are ready and functional.

Update - I have just been advised that tado are sending 2x Smart Wired Thermostats to address the problem. Here is hoping this fixes the issue

@Emcee - seems rthe Smart Thermostat X's I just received have solve the issue. All working now as it should have been 👍️

I received the replacements but similarly to @rjblake these are Wired Thermostats. Unlike the V3 setup where it was possible to set the Wired Thermostats in the sensor mode here it is not possible. I am also unable to remove it from being a zone controller.
I don't understand why the Wired Thermostats were sent instead of the "upgraded" Wireless Temperature sensors...
  • Is there a particular serial number we need to look for which will identify which version of the hardware we have? I'm about to purchase the wireless starter kit & additional wireless temp sensor so would be good to know how we can identify?
  • I bought the wireless sensor last week and it showed up as thermostat in Home Assistant via Matter as it should.

    Very nice!
