Unable to open Smart Radiator Thermostat

What seems like something of a stupid question. I've been given a used Quattro pack of Smart Radiator Thermostats, and three were easy to set up, but I can't get the fourth unit open to install batteries. The original owner is "shrug, I don't know, they've been back in the box for a while".

Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

    Had an offlist suggestion and now able to open - (gripping firmly on the inner plastic ring). Thanks :)
