My boiler failed yesterday, should I get some alert from the Tado App?

Hi,

My boiler failed yesterday, should I get some alert from the Tado App?

The app seems to think that it is still heating my house, even though the boiler is switched off awaiting replacement parts to be fitted.

Also, the app heating graph still shows all rads being heated, until I switched them all off via the app earlier today.

Is this normal behaviour?

regards

Stavros

the app is just telling you that it is calling for heat, whether the boiler is actually doing anything is a different matter.

if your tado system is set up in relay mode then there is no communication with the boiler at all, just an on/off switch.

if you're running it in digital mode (opentherm, ebus etc) then the tado system may get some info from the boiler, but the app will still display it's calling for heat.

  • ok thanks; so in my case, it is an old boiler, unlikley to provide any intelligent feedback.

It would be nice if the app was clever enough to realise that calling for heat for 10 hours solid and the temperature is still going down on every rad would be a red flag prompting some sort of alert, but hey, maybe I'm asking too much.

It is a good thing that it failed now, while I'm at home, rather than over Xmas when I'd be away :-)

  • how is the tado system supposed to know your boiler isn't working?

if could be working fine but it's your rads that are faulty, or some other random fault causing the temp to not rise (like multiple open windows or doors).

in a relay system all that happens is that the tado flips the relay signal on your boiler from off to on, it gets no feedback from the boiler if that was successful or not (that's not a tado limitation, just the way a relay system works).

  • I understand and agree that the app may not know about the boiler.

All I'm saying is that 10 hours of heating and the temperature on all rads is going down towards zero is an unusual situation that should warrant an alert notification!

Still, never mind, I just hoped that with technology being what it is now-a-days that the app/Tado system would be smarter than it appears to be.

  • This content has been removed.
  • i'm not convinced about the "learning" capabilities of any smart central heating system. i used nest before tado.

all i use them for is to be able to control the heating from the smart devices, and use automations from homekit based on time of day or if anyone is home or not. anything more than that is pure "algorithm" nonsense.

  • as an aside, does anyone know if the heating pattern has changed in the last month or so?

I'm sure that last year, when I called for heat on a rad, the boiler came on and stayed on until the target temp was reached.

This year, it looks like the boiler comes on for a bit, then goes off, then on again for a bit more etc

It seems to take a lot longer before the room comes up to temp.

  • has your boiler changed in that time?

@StavrosK I've seen such a feature in action.

Radiator Thermostat E1 (not made by tado°) has an option called 'valve inspection'. It can send a push notification if something doesen't look right...

  • no, the boiler hasn't changed at all - until it failed a couple of days ago - the fan siezed up, waiting for a replacement part now.

I don't remember seeing 'valve inspection' as an option on my app - I'll have another look - thanks rafm5

    @StavrosK You won't be able to find it - E1 isn't made by tado° :-(

  • Ah, thats a shame :-(

Care & Protect finally noticed that my boiler was not providing heat - after nearly 48 hours.... and I got a notification on my phone - but only for one rad....
