Baxi 836 Combi + Tado wireless kit + EU receiver how to wire for OpenTherm

Hi,

I am in yh UK and I recently brought a Tado wireless v3 kit in black as it was on offer at screwfix. I did my research before purchasing and know i had to pair it with an EU receiver (model number BU1186596352) in order to use opentherm. This also arrived yesterday. Can somebody show me some.images of what has to be connected and where inside the receiver and in the boiler in order to work with opentherm ? The wiring diagram shows only 2 connection to the + and - terminals on the receiver no live or neutral is this correct?

  • You need a power source for Opentherm. Have you got instructions from Tado?
  • The wiring diagram i am referring to is for the EU receiver i got it from tado online as it didn't come in the box. The ones that came with the starter kit were of no use as they are for the UK receiver that it comes with. https://cdn.brandfolder.io/607DGEMS/as/j4mjvsgpjtghjkm57fkx5q7h/104204-DIGITAL-WRB01IB01-INSTALLER_MANUAL-TA-EN-00-V3.pdf
Is thay correct for the EU receiver? So which diagram should i follow? I just need to understand where i have to put the wires both in the boiler and in the receiver. I can't believe tado removed OT functionality for the UK, as if it wasn't bad enough that i have had to buy an extra receiver ontop of the kit but also have the stress of not understand what to wire where because i can't find any clear instructions for the EU model i now have. Please if you know where i can find the correct wiring diagram for the model number in my first post and and where to wire inside the boiler link me to it.

You shouldn’t be following any diagrams from the box, Tado gives you custom instructions when you start the install.

Pretty certain you have an extension kit, not a wireless receiver if the serial number starts with BU.
  • When i started i followed the app linked all the devices etc then when it came to wiring it said to follow the booklet. And yes its an extension kit. I thought the extension kit is used to replace the receiver at the boiler? And that allows for it to be wired to OpenTherm?
  • Isn't the extension kit just a receiver ? Im getting more and more confused now, when i looked in this forums i saw people saying all you need if you buy the uk started it, is the EU extension kit. I thought you just used the EU extension kit as the receiver instead of the UK as the UK cannot be wired to OpenTherm?
  • No, the wireless receiver and extension perform the same function but Tado renamed it. There’s no such thing as an eu extension kit, but there is an eu wireless receiver.

If the app is saying follow the booklet that’s interesting, it sent me detailed instructions. I think you’d be better off getting a professional to do it, you need to be gas safe to open the boiler anyway.

This is the extension kit manual for low voltage connections https://cdn.brandfolder.io/607DGEMS/as/bxgtx5kghgjrbcs4m68kqch/Extension_Kit_Manual_-_Low_Voltage_Digital_Installations.pdf

You’ll need to look at your boiler manual to find out where your opentherm connections are.

    Here the wiring diagram.

H1 and H2 go to the digital ports on the Tado Extension Kit (polarity does not matter)

G4 (add the wire to the existing, do not remove it) goes to N on the Tado Extension Kit

G5 (add the wire to the existing, do not remove it) goes to L on the Tado Extension Kit

G3, G4 and G5 come from your mains supply to boiler. G4 & G5 need to go to the Tado Extension Kit also.

  • Thanks all i managed to reset the app and scanned the eu extension kit it then gave me instructions one what wires to replace from the old receiver (honeywell) i attached it, just as it said and heating is all working now. I havent checked the boiler connection yet but i noticed the bolier clicking alot at the start and the temp constantly changing on boiler lcd when using tado. Also noticed the heating takes a little longer to warm up than previously. Does this mean it is using OpenTherm as its modulating ? One other thing im not sure of is, if the boiler is supposed to turn off when it reaches a desired temp if i set it in the app or thermostat? Cause it seems to be on constantly with tado?
  • I don’t think you’ve connected it correctly in that case. Have you connected the + and - wires to the Opentherm connections on the boiler?
  • No because the app didnt give me options om how to wire it, it was just one walkthrough the whole way, so i didnt know if it was telling me to wore for opentherm or not
  • rewire to above, then follow this guide to change to OT

  • If you want to wire it for Opentherm you have the instructions above. + and - on the extension kit to the opentherm terminals on the boiler, plus l and n for power. At the moment it sounds like it isn’t wired correctly. If you open the boiler you should be gas safe or use a professional who is.
  • @andyblac looking at the guide you sent g4 and g5 look correct 2 wires in each 1 from mains other from extension kit. N and l from extension kit correspond to the correct terminals. G3 contains a green and yellow neutral from mains. Looks like all i need is to connect H1 and H2. In the thermostat terminals 1 and 4 there is a wire for each which go to g1 and g2 in the boiler. So i should move them to the OT terminals h1 and h2 ? And then they connect to the + and - terminals in the extension kit. Is that correct? The link yo sent leads me to input the code for a bridge.
  • Green and yellow earth, not neutral i meant to say

The link he’s sent you is to scan your bridge AFTER you’ve connected the wires correctly to make sure the extension kit is set for opentherm. You’re correct on the wiring.
  • @johnnyp78 yes correct, it will guide him though the configuration for OpenTherm.

  • Ok thanks, ive rewired and its now on, i followed the link but i need to change the boiler to digital im getting this message: Connection to boiler: Non-Digital
    Recommended digital connection type(s):
OpenTherm (D01). Where can i set d01? Ive tried looking at boiler and tado app but cant see it

  • Got it all done, its says the flow temp cant be read now but its also stats this sometimes is the case so looks like it is working! Thanks so much for all of your help both of you! Is there anything else i can do to test open therm is working correctly?
  • I just rechecked and everything is now ticked :) thanks again!
  • np glad you got it sorted.

  • One other question is it normal for the lcd on my boiler to show the temp constantly fluctuating? Up and down ?
  • Ive just turned it on to test and the temp is currently fluctuating. No noise and clicking like previously though. Just the sound of it warming
  • yes, that is OpenTherm modulating the flow temp, due to current demand.

  • I thought so just wanted to be sure, perfect thank you again
  • you might want to read this thread https://community.tado.com/en-gb/discussion/8611/release-opentherm-max-flow-temperature-setting/p1

to set your max flow temp, as the manual dial is now overridden by OpenTherm.

  • Thank you i will download the app set this too
  • For baxi i read the max flow temp should be 60-65 is that right?

50-55˚c is the absolute the best you can get out of boiler, but it all depends on your home heat loss efficiency and Radiator sizes, you will have to start doing tests and taking meter readings, to see what max flow is best for your home, But 60˚c is good place to start. You might want to also consider "Setback" temperatures

i.e I have a room in my home that the boiler struggles to heat the room up when set to 60˚c.
