Heating not coming on

Hi all. I went away for a few days, and now my heating is no longer working. I have changed nothing - only turned it off in the app while away. The hot water is working, though perhaps not coning on right away when I switch to it.

I have a system boiler, a wireless receiver, bridge and various wall thermostats and radiator thermostats. According to the app everything is working, and everything is still paired.

The wireless receiver was showing an orange light, but that has now gone after I reset it. When I press for heating in the app it lights up the right light on the wireless receiver, and it now seems to be adjusting at least some of the radiators sometimes, but it is not calling for heat from the boiler at all. Nothing is happening there.

The distance between my wireless receiver and bridge is not very far. Maybe 6 metres of open hallway maximum, so seems unlikely that is the problem.

Very confused here and about to raise a case with Tado, but thought that I'd ask here too!

@GusAlston Sorry to hear your heating is not working.

From your descriptions, were you ware changing the wireless receiver configuraton? A 'yellow' light is the setting for Combi? Otherwise, Tado appears to be working. The fault is apparent from the Wireless receiver onwards. A zone valve can fail or seize at any time.

    Working through the fault-finding.

    1. It can take minute or so for change on the App for ON or OFF to percolate through the cloud to the wireless receiver.
    2. You should hear the relay 'click' when the CH or HW light comes ON or OFF.
    3. Do you have a mains tester to check that 240V is on the CH NO connections?

From your descriptions, the most likely suspect is the CH zone valve.
    4. Check that the CH and HW zone valves are operating correctly. There is manual lever at one end.
    5. If the CH is ON, the valve motor should have pulled the internals across, and the lever will move easily to the left. This should fire up the boiler.
    6. When the the CH is OFF, this should take some pressure to move the lever to the left. Moving fully to the left should fire up the boiler.
    7. Valves can also be sticky and e.g. not move fully to the left when told. The final couple of mm are needed for the internal microswitch.
    8. If the HW is ON, the motor should have pulled the internals across, and the lever will move easily to the left. This should fire up the boiler.
    9. Presumably you have a Tank stat for the HW? When the water is hot, the valve should be OFF and the boiler will NOT fire up.
    10. When the the CH or HW is OFF, this should take some pressure to move the lever to the left. Moving fully to the left should manually fire up the boiler.

Come back when you've been able to check these steps.

  • Thank you this is amazingly comprehensive and helpful! I've currently managed to get the heating working temporarilly by moving the lever manually, and hoping to work through the rest with a plumber friend tomorrow. I am thinking that the valve is at least part of the problem, and will work through the rest of this tomorrow when I have the energy again.
