Opentherm, Ideal Independent boiler configuration problems.

Options

I purchased an extension kit which had opentherm compatibility to use with a new boiler installation.

The boiler is an ideal independent c30, I have spoken to Ideal and they assured me the model is Opentherm compatible.

The boiler was wired with Opentherm, but the heating would never turn off, even when no heating should have been requested.

I had a fairly lengthy email exchange with Tado trying to fix it, they made some changes in the backend of my configuration and had me double check some wiring.

Ultimately Tado concluded it was not going to work and I should just connect with the relay, but they couldn't really explain why. Additionally, the relay doesn't seem to work either, and I have a tile in the app for hot water control now which I don't think is correct.

Any recommendations on how to proceed/troubleshoot? I would love to get Opentherm working obviously, I have invested fairly significantly in the system, and want save as much energy as possible.

Hmm. I can't see anything about opentherm support in the manual for your boiler, but I know more recent Ideal combis like the Vogue and Logic support opentherm. Some models need an opentherm harness fitted to the PCB - something like this https://www.heatingspareparts.com/boiler-spares/partno/177555/379297 . Have you tried that? I'm afraid it isn't immediately obvious to me how it would connect on an Independent.

I also found it difficult to find in the manual.. thanks for having a look.

Tado support mentioned a harness, but Ideal told me I didnt need one.

However that link you find clearly lists an opentherm harness for an Ideal Independent! So I think its worth a go, maybe this is Ideal support letting me down, not Tado.

Having said that, I have had a look at the wiring loom inside my boiler, and the Opentherm terminals look thoroughly connected to a harness already.

In fact I think it looks identical to the newer Logic boilers which do not need a harness, this would be consistent with what Ideal told me over the phone, that the boiler is already set up for opentherm.

It might be worth getting a boiler specialist to have a look in that case. I know on my ideal vogue boiler I just had to connect a wire from the pcb then and wire the extension kit to the Opentherm terminals and it worked fine straight away. As yours seems to have Opentherm support I don’t see why it should be any different.

@johnnyp78 did you power the extension kit from the mains then wire into the boiler?

Our original wiring is two grey cables coming to the old Honeywell control box then white flex to the boiler. (Relay wiring)

Tado tell me I can also wire a smart thermostat straight to the boiler. I think that doesn’t require means power, only opentherm

@ralphmoors is your extension kit the one with the logo in the centre?

In my case the extension kit takes power from the 230v spur in the boiler but can also be wired with a plug to a socket if there’s one nearby. The thermostats (wired or wireless) are battery powered.

Is the logic independent a combi? What a funny name!
