Wired smart thermostat works intermittently

I have a wired smart thermostat that doesn't work reliably. A number of mornings since I installed it the heating hasn't come on. I suspect that the pins from the thermostat don't make a very good connection with the back plate. If I take the thermostat off the back plate and remount it the heating usually kicks in. Anyone else having similar problems?
