call for heat - none tado controlled radiators

Hi,

I have recently upgraded most of my radiators to tado controlled TRVs - around 80% the other 20% are "dumb" and in places like bathrooms (towel rails) and utility room.

If I wanted to turn the heating on simply to dry towels, is there an option to just call for heat? All i can see is how to set the tado TRVs to a temp to call for heat, but in some instances I would like all tado TRVs to remain off, but have the boiler turn on. It would be a little over simplistic to presume that once you introduce tado to your home, it has complete control.

An additional tile on the homepage of just heating on/off , the same way as hot water works would be ideal!

@JL2020 If you could do what you suggest, in your example, it would mean that 20% of your rads would be heating whenever you used this approach. It's either all dumb rads get heat or none.

  • @samd yes thats correct. I am happy with that, i was just using towel radiators as an example.

Perhaps I should rephase my question - for a house that still has a percentage of "dumb" radiators, how can I turn the heating on to heat these if my tado TRVs are not calling for heat.

@JL2020 OK sorry if I misunderstood. The only way I can think of is to choose a tado controlled rad which is the smallest output and turn that one on. The problem is that I cannot see tado wanting to do your suggestion cos they want you to buy more tado TRVs!!

  • @samd thats the only option I could think of, but it seems a work around. Tado must recognise the use case, I am likely to be amongst many people that do not have TRVs on towel radiators, and in the warmer months I will wish to have these on without wishing to work around the problem calling for another radiator to be on.

I can see how a wireless thermostat would also resolve this issue, but that is needless extra hardware when a simple tile on the homepage would suffice.

  • Hi. I am currently experiencing similar issues with “ dumb radiators” kicking in when a TRV demands heat or loses connectivity. This has occurred in the middle of the night and even when I placed the system in “Away” mode! 3am! Heating the house up. I eventually had to turn power supply off to the boiler. The main issue is that the larger the house the further from the Bridge = loss of connectivity. Having spent a lot on the system Tado support suggested I return all my TRV’s! VERY HELPFUL! NOT! I think some software programming work needs to done to improve this as at the moment not working at all smoothly.

  • Hi GrayDave4276

Your suggestion of a wired Thermostat looks interesting, how did you install into your wiring system directly into your extension or thermostat? as i am looking at ways of achieving this for a conservatory and bathroom which are the Dumb radiators for the system. However during the night these are hot , therefore, i am wasting Heat and Money . If i am reading this thread correctly , even the Dumb radiators can call for heat even if the rest of the SRT's are off ??

  • My heating is controlled by Tado and I have and Extension Kit with the Bridge and a Smart Thermostat. The Dumb radiators I have are indeed heating up but that is due to a " rogue' SRT/TRV calling for heat or faulty software. My Dumb rads cannot call for heat without the main thermostat requiring heat but the dodgy Tado gear can and does.

I am being woken up with my house heating up as the Dumb rads are getting hot due to what I think is a serious software issue with the SRT's. Before I bought 10 SRT's the system behaved as it should BUT since installing them I am having to get up in the middle of the night to turn power off to the boiler. As even when I put the system to " Away " mode the boiler still fires up inexplicably. So. No SRT is on water off on " Frost Protection" and fires up.

This is a waste of fuel. Very annoying. Loss of sleep ( VERY ANNOYING!).

I am sure that Tado needs to sort out the software system. The connectivity is also poor with random SRT's dropping connection. This can also result in the boiler firing up.

Sky had a connectivity with Sky Q boxes when the came in. Homes were fitted with signal boosters to connect Sky Room boxes to the Q box but eventually Sky updated the software and negated the need for the boosters. I believe Tado should do the same urgently and fix the faulty SRT's.

If you look through other comments a theme of connectivity issue is prevalent!

    @GoodBranch

Have you considered invoking Tado's Energy Savings Guarantee to get your money back and replace the system with a different one?

  • Thanks for that and I will look at it! I actually really like Tado and have had it since circa 2013 but the episode with the SRT/TVR's has been a real pain and very disappointed.

As others again poor / slow customer support with a poor attitude towards the annoying customers.

It is head in the sand and not actually agreeing they have problems but they do read this forum and it is full of similar gripes. They said to me that I would not get further support as I had asked for so much and if I dont like the SRT's send them back ( to Amazon and Costco)!! Used gear not in boxes and minus the plastic convertors which I had been advised to bin in recycling by Tado as they didn't want them!
