Batteries

I bought a tado set up last year thermostat and 3 rad valves. One morning I woke up to go to toilet and it felt pretty hot as i moved towards the toilet when I opened the door further it was like an oven in the toilet turned out it needed the batteries changed which was only about 2-3 months after buying the rad valves.Apparently the rad valve just stays open if the battery needs changing and goes up to the max heat. Now there is a warning again that the same radiator battery needs changing as it's very low again so this is the 2nd time this radiator valve needs changing and this rad valve is actually not used this much compared to my living room one and bedroom one. So is there something wrong with this rad valve asking for batteries again being hardly used compared with the others which have never had to ask to change batteries since i purchased the tado setup ?

They should switch to frost protection when the batteries fail. I’ve had them fail while on holiday and not had any issues.

  • It might be that this radiator is further away from the bridge than other devices. Another thing to check is how easy the pin in the radiator valve(not the trv) moves. If it's stiff to press down it might be working harder, if it's used less it's possibly more prone to seizing up. I've got one like this and I use some grips to manually move the pin up and down till it loosens.
  • Kevin yeah that's what i thought but it just seemed to bypass that If indeed is what's meant to happen. It has to when you logically think of it just imagine you go away and it does this it's on 24 hrs some bill when you get back from a 2 weeks holiday 🤔
  • Will have a look at that mojo and see how stiff the pin is, i did give them all a good pint test when they were fitted they seemed fine no issues but worth another look
  • Wouldn't you put heating onto frost mode when you go away?
I'm wondering if maybe that TRV needs a hard reset? It shouldn't ever keep on heating, that would imply the heating is set far too high in that room or the TRv has crashed?
  • I probably might have forgot about switching them on frost mode if i had been away for any length of time. I have them all switched off now and only use them when needed it's not like they are set to come on at certain times. One thing for sure tho i remember the rad valve in question was set to 18° but when it happened the valve had stayed open till it hit the max temp on it and stayed there till I switched if off.
