boiler cycling alot in Opentherm

hi,

i have the radiator and room thermostats in 5 rooms, and only my living room is set to call the heat, the other radiator thermostats are not assigned a zone controller.

i've had a viessmann vitodens 050 installed 2 years ago running in opentherm.

although it regulates the heat well and doesn't overshoot alot at all and hits the set temp fine, i find in the colder months, its causing my boiler to be cycling more or less all day long.

is there a worry where this will eventually cause the pump or something to mess up over time?

should i consider going to Relay mode instead of Opentherm?

My limited understanding of Opentherm is that it should allow the boiler to run at lower flow temperatures and operate more efficiently. Reduced flow temperature in turn suggests that the boiler would be running for longer periods during colder months. The report that heat (room temperature?) is regulated well suggests that the boiler and control system are doing their job well.

Had the same boiler in my last home.I found that each room in my old home had different demand patterns, so as the rads shut down the boiler would throttle back and just top things up.
For now, going back to your question, am presuming that you have Tado trvs on those rads. @Wateroakley's comment makes sense to me and if that's the case the app should tell you which room is asking for heat if you think the system should be quiet. Will take time, but it can help to settle ones mind one way or another.
  • My system has 12 TRV's (so 10 capable of demanding heat). The boiler does run for longer periods as the heat output is reduced. Sometimes the outflow is down close to 30deg. This shows the average run time by month of my system. One room is (north facing/solid walls) is often calling for heat.
