Greenstar 28i Junior combi MK IV - Tado

Hello,

I have a Greenstar 28i Junior combi MK IV - this connects to a British Gas WR1 and then onto a wireless thermostat.

The WR1 is connected to the mains, then the boiler is connected off of that - the boiler doesn't have its own direct power - only via the WR1 - is this normal?

If so, how do I then connect the tado into this please and which is the best model for me?

@merlinbrent Best to post pictures of the setup and wiring. Easiest to do that from a web browser. Does the Greenstar have the optional contoller? Looking on-line the WR1 appears to be a rebadged Drayton Digistat? Presumably the wiring L N E goes from the fused boiler switch to the WR1 receiver backplate and then on to the boiler?

I'd suggest a Tado wireless starter kit. You should be able to replace the BG WR1 receiver with the Tado wireless receiver and set it to 'combi' mode. Tado support should give you detailed wiring instructions. Fit the Tado wireless room stat in an appropriate location, probably in the same place as the BG room stat. If the Greenstar has the manual clock/timer, it's easily set to 24/7 'ON'.

For clarity, the main power supply to the boiler goes via the WR1 - so if the WR1 wasn't there, the boiler wouldn't have power.

With regard to the boiler’s mains feed you can replicate the wiring of the old receiver in the tado version. It was, presumably, just a convenient way of cable routing when the system was originally installed . . .

@merlinbrent That’s the one. We used the same wireless starter kit for our rellie’s Greenstar with a manual timer. Should be a straightforward job for a competent DIYer to the replace the BG wireless receiver with the Tado wireless receiver. You’ll set the wireless receiver to ‘combi’ and the boiler timer to 24/7. Then your heating control will be via the Tado app or room stat.

Hi all,

I managed to install Tado a week or so back, and all is working as expected. The only thing that caused me a little concern was the fact that the Tado app mentioned not needing a grey wire and to cap it off.

In my case, the grey wire was and still is connected inside the boiler to the LS point. Which I believe means Live Supply. It still seems to work without this so I'm not sure if this is a problem. I'm also not sure if capping it off and leaving it is safe enough? I've attached a couple of photos to show you what I mean. In the first photo you'll see the Tado and just underneath it you can see the grey cable which is capped off. In the second photo you'll see the boiler LS still connected.

Congratulations on getting it going!. Looks like you have terminated the grey wire at the wireless receiver end with a wago connector? If it's working and all the wires are safely terminated on a wiring point or wago, take a final photo and leave it alone.

The only thing to add is that the cables on the wireless receiver could be tidied up and clamped on the external sleeving.
