Confused about TRVs in same room as thermostat

Do we use TRVs in the same room as the thermostat or is it a waste of time? To quote TADO themselves

"If you install Smart Radiator Thermostats, it is recommended to also equip the radiators in the room in which the Smart Thermostat or Wireless Temperature Sensor is located with Smart Radiator Thermostats which will turn down the heat supply to the room when the call for heat for that room is satisfied while another room might still request heat."

but then they also say this...

"You should not install the thermostatic radiator valves in the same room where you have installed the boiler thermostat. If the temperature of TRV is set below the boiler temperature, the TRV would turn the radiator off before the boiler’s temperature is reached."

  • I think the last part is a reference to manual trvs. Regardless, the first quote is the one to follow.

The room thermostat is more accurate than the TRV sensor. About +/- 0.1 deg C vs 0.5 deg C.

The reasons to fit both thermostat and TRV in the same room: a) you have a large room with multiple radiators and can pick the optimal thermostat location; b) you have a big radiator or furnishings that affect the TRV sensor. Our lounge rad is quite big, the TRV is on a long riser pipe, behind the sofa - the room temperature was off by 2 deg C - after faffing around with the temperature offset we added a room stat - bingo! SWMBO is happy.
