Wireless thermostat flat batteries: why no hot water?

Wireless thermostat with wireless receiver and separate hot water boiler. When batteries are flat, hot water doesn’t work either. Why is that? I would expect the bridge to keep communicating with the wireless receiver, according to the hot water schedule. I don’t understand what the wireless thermostat has to do with switching hot water.

HW control will be linked to your wireless thermostat so that you can turn it on/off from the device. I assume that's why it stops working when the wireless thermostat is offline. A bit rubbish but at least we all now know what to expect if that happens to anyone else
