Existing Tado Install - Replacing Boiler (Heatable)

Hi All,

Just after a spot of advice and experience. My boiler (circa 2005) is limping through the winter and I’m going to replace it.

Happy with a quote from Heatable for a Viessmann Vitodens 100-W 25kW. Standard boiler swap.

My Tado equipment:

Hot water and heating receiver
1x Thermostat
7 x TRV

I’ve had no issue with Tado so far (Since September) apart from needing to open up a couple of non-Tado TRV in the house to stop my antique boiler going into overheat mode.

Does anyone have experience with my potential new boiler driving a Tado setup? Any horror stories before I pull the trigger?

Thanks so much. 🙏🏼

  • I presume it's a heat only model. Seems quite big and it's shame not to make use of the great modulation range it has.

Maybe have a look at weather compensation, as I'm sure it supports it.

  • Yep this is the heat only model.

Does that mean that Tado can’t use the modulation to better control central heating? I believe this model has a 1:10 modulation range.
  • It's got a great range, as I said.

Tado don't do modulation unless it's a Combi. Things like S and Y plan don't get it.

  • This is really useful mate - Thanks so much.
  • Explore the weather compensation as a way to get it to modulate down. Have a look at the 200 too, as it has the advanced WC options if you fancy WC.

  • From what I’ve heard with viessmann you might get better results by ditching Tado altogether and just using weather compensation, especially as you can’t install Tado on a modulating protocol.

  • @GrayDav4276 this might seem an odd comment on the Tado boards - but do you not think there’s much value in having the TRV level control in the app?

I’m going to speak to my engineer to see if there’s anything creative they can do with the WC sensor, but keeping Tado.
  • @johnnyp78 I’m going to see if my engineer can do anything creative to use the WC sensor to maybe ‘fake’ some kind of modular protocol.

I really like having room-by-room control. And my entire house is tied into Homekit due to the wife approval factor.
  • You will get modulating control with wc, but it will mean that you will get very low maximum heating temperatures because it’s designed to be left on all the time. You don’t need to use trvs with it because it heats the whole house to a constant temperature. It’s possible there might be a boost mode with Weismann’s own control but I don’t know for sure.

  • You won’t be adjusting WC slopes on the Viessmann 100. That’s a feature the 200 has.

I’m not an advocate for all the zoning that people get sucked into with the SRTs etc.

I do like WC and I like PDHW.

  • @jmscmbs I just wanted to clarify a few points in case there's any confusion about modulation and weather compensation.

    1) The turn down ratio refers the gas burner output. Using Tado in relay mode the 25KW boiler will modulate its heat output down to 2.5KW. This low output is good as your new boiler will be able to maintain a fixed flow temperature with less chance of short cycling. Your numerous TRVs will make good use of the boiler's modulation.

    2) With weather compensation the boiler can also modulate the flow temperature. So instead of a fixed flow temperature (e.g. 70°C) it can modulate down to 40°C or less on a mild day.

    3) It looks like you have a hot water cylinder. If you do then you will also need the system setup for Priority Hot Water before you can use weather compensation. A flow temperature of 40°C is not going to heat your cylinder to 60°C. Priority hot water will override the weather compensation and set the flow temperature to maximum until the hot water cylinder thermostat is satisfied.

  • Looks like viessmann weather compensation kits come with a cylinder demand box, which I’m assuming allows it to do priority hot water. https://viessmanndirect.co.uk/files//de36168a-6a60-42b9-b0e4-ada60112a767/WB1B%20Compact%20Outdoor%20Sensor%20Instructions%20-%20Mod.pdf
  • @GrilledCheese2 really well explained thanks.
  • Hopefully we haven't given you a headache.

The information is all sound and consistent. Boiler is great. Tado, less so...
