How to release thermostat from its mounting

My thermostat keeps rotating with its mounting so I can’t release it to change the batteries, I have this problem on at least 3 different thermostats and wondering if this is a common design or installation problem?

    You need to screw the mounting on much tighter, possibly using a spanner to hold the collar. At the moment it sounds like it’s too loose.
