Leaking towel rail since installing Tado on other rads

This may be a coincidence...

Since installing Tado and smart thermostats on all my radiators (except one where the smart thermostat was DOA and is being replaced) the towel radiator in our bathroom has developed a leak.

As the towel rad doesn't have a TRV (our plumber advised they shouldn't have..?) this is often the only radiator getting heated when the other rooms have reached temperature. Is it possible/likely it's getting too much pressure? Or just an unfortunately timed fault perhaps?

Any thoughts appreciated - our plumber isn't particularly savvy with "modern kit" so his suggestion that it must be due to the Tado stuff just because it's started leaking afterwards isn't 100% convincing...

Thanks,

Steve

  • Is your system sealed or vented?

  • He is presumably talking about using it as a bypass rad to relieve pressure on the boiler when it’s on and all the smart trvs are closed (which should rarely happen anyway). I can’t say whether that’s the cause of it leaking but I doubt your plumber would be making it up.

A leaking rad is a leak. You’ll want a plumber to fix it. Maybe the leak is due to increased pressure from a hotter rad: seam, joint or pinhole? PV=NRT is the scientific equation. Check that a sealed system is not over-pressure?
