Tado new TRV installation leaving boiler on constantly

Hello,

Happy new year! I have recently purchased 8 TRVs and installed them into the house. Previously prior to the installation I had only the Tado internet bridge, extension kit and thermostat. Heating worked perfectly with just this.

I have 11 radiators in my house and only 8 connected with TRVs. The other 2 are set to a low heat. Now what I am finding is after the schedule of my heating has turned off, all radiators with the TRVs installed are infact off. But the 2 without are still hot. I then go out to the garage and check the boiler and see the extension kit still calling for heat and my boiler on.

Does anyone have any suggestions why? I have recently moved the internet bridge a tad further away from the extension kit I thought maybe it’s dropped it’s connection before it calls to turn the heating off? Could it be a faulty TRV? Really, I’m very confused. Currently with my boiler being on constantly it’s actually costing more than spending £400 on the TRVs and I feel like sending them back.

Thanks in advance!

  • It sounds like it’s a communication problem between the bridge and the extension kit. Otherwise it could be a trv calling for heat but not opening enough to let any heat in. It could also be Tado keeping the heating on slightly above the target temperature before switching it off.

  • All of the devices listed in the Tado app are all set to their off schedule or have even tried manually with the “off” setting and yet the boiler is still on and extension kit calling for heat.

I did just try turn the existing thermostat heating on, then off straight after and it did in fact stop the boiler in the end. Could be something wrong with the schedule I have setup?

It’s a shame there’s no diagnosis in the app itself. Would be nice to check if devices failed to turn off or if a device disconnected or something.
  • @billycrid perhaps you've done this already, but I suggest looking at the Heating Activity under the Care & Protect menu. I think this is the most accurate area to see if any device is calling for heat. If the heating activity is 0% for all devices and the boiler is still alight, then it suggests a communication problem, rather than scheduling or obscure app features.

@billycrid as you say you've got an extension kit, if you haven't already I would confirm exactly what the pulsing light is doing when the heating is staying on.

If it is doing anything other than the normal pulsing heart beat then it is likely it has lost connection with one or more of the thermostats. If it is doing one of the things in the following link then it definitely has lost connection to something:

My guess is your extension kit has lost connection to one or more thermostats and is either in "Interrupted On" or "Solid On" mode.

Annoyingly this won't reveal which thermostat it has lost connection with. There may be clues by looking at the room graphs and looking for breaks or flat-lines in the data.

Another thing to try, which isn't 100% guaranteed is to go into Settings - Rooms & Devices - then click on each tado device and select Blink Display. Often a device with poor connection will have a significant delay before it displays "Hi" on itself (or it may not even display at all). This can help narrow down the suspect device, but like I say isn't a bullet proof technique.

  • @GrayDav4276 it's a shame the heating activity is not available to everyone. Very useful to diagnose what devices are demanding heat, especially when there's a lot of TRVs.
