heating has come on, but schedule is set to 14C, heating has heated up to 20.8C

boiler is coming on as if NO is closed and signalling the boiler to fire. The Wired thermostat does not appear to be recognising the Schedule times and the temps set. Boiler is fired on all the time.

Can you suggest any tests I can make to verify that the Wired thermostat is faulty?

I have a voltmeter, and I am a competent DIYer.

Thank you

  • thanks Montage.

    Looks like an intermittent issue.

switched on the boiler this morning and heated to the set temp in schedule and cut out.

Going to check the points yourself and johnnyp78 suggested.

    Thanks for the inout

  • just to close this topic off:

tado wired thermostat was firing up the boiler to heat hot water ( set to come on twice per pay on the old controller which it wired thermostat was linked to). So the firing signal was 'open', making me think that the boiler was getting a call signal for heating.

The confusing issue was that the zone valve was sticking, open to the heating circuit and heating the radiators not the hot water cylinder. Gave the zone valve a bit of a tap and it switched over to heat the hot water!

    Mystery and problem solved.

Thanks to all who commented on this one.

  • just to clarify:

The wired Taco thermostat is working on Wifi, registers temp, but does not seem to switch on and switch off the boiler according to the set schedule.

I've replaced the batteries in the wired Tado thermostat.

  • It could be that the zone controller for the room is set to independent rather than the wired thermostat, though I would expect that to leave the boiler off. If you have a system boiler have you checked the heating / hot water valves are moving freely? Otherwise sometimes stuck relays in the Tado device can be resolved by giving them a firm tap.
  • Hi johnnyp78

    thanks for your response.

there are no other temp controllers other than the wired thermostat, which has a wired backplate and clip on control/control unit.

the control unit can be controlled by WiFi OK, I can set temps and adjust schedules/time blocks.

the issue is that the boiler fires up and continues heating, with wired thermostat seemingly not shutting down according to the scheduled times or temps. It’s as if the signal for the boiler to fire up is stuck on. I’ve give the clip on control unit a tap with the handle of a screw driver a few times with no luck.

any other diagnostic suggestions. I’ve also powered down the bridge, and reset the wired thermostat.

    thanks again

  • Confirm your theory using the meter.

  • Did your wired thermostat ever work correctly? If not, it sounds like a wiring issue. Have you bridged any wires?
  • Hi Johnnyp78,

There wired Thermostat has been installed over 10 years ago and has worked great.

Your suggestion of checking the zone valve was spot on, it was sticking on the heating circuit, so when the hot water times from the old controller made a call to the boiler for heat, the boiler was in fact heating the Radiator circuit. A light tap on the Zone valve switched it over.

And of course because our wired Thermostat only controls the heating and we rely on the olde controller for hot ware control. the two controllers act/behave independently!

Thanks for the suggestions again, and a happy New year too
