What to do with old room thermostat

I've had Tado for almost a year now. When I initially set it up, somewhere in the instructions I think it said you can either remove the existing room thermostat, or turn it up to the maxmimum.

I opted for the latter - I Honeywell T6306B1028 room thermostat in my hall which I've had on maximum for the last 11 months and Tado seems to have worked fine.

I'm now decorating the hall so was hoping to remove it. However:

  1. I can't find where in the tado instructions it said you could remove it, so wanted to check that is ok to remove it?
  2. If I do remove it, what am I supposed to do with the wires? Do they need to connect to something else e.g. a fused terminal? If not, can I just leave them in the wall and fill over it, or is that bad practice?
  3. Any other considerations?

Thanks!

  • As you’ve opted for ‘full on’ you’ll need to bridge the L and SL in your existing stat wiring.

Assuming you have the wireless room stat, there should be 3 wago connectors in the box. Terminate N and E from existing stat, each in a separate connector. Use third connector to put L and SL side by side, which creates a bridge.

If you can’t find those connectors, standard electrical connectors will work and come in various sizes. As you’re terminating, the smallest should do. To bridge with these, connect L and SL end to end with connector. N and E in own connectors.

Technically, E can just be sheathed and doesn’t need connecting, but others carry mains voltage when system is charged you cannot leave these live and not terminated.

Use blanking plate to cover old stat hole (which come in various finishes to suit).

Alternatively, you can disconnect at the other end (wiring centre if you have a cyclinder - don’t mess with boiler wiring). That would enable you to just cut off the wiring and fill old stat hole. However, that would stop you reverting to a cheaper wired stat if/when you move, for example.
