Worcester 8000 and TADO—extremely confused

I have had a whole house TADO system for a few years and have love it.

Today we had an 8000 life installed and the installer informed us the boiler is not compatible. Sadly, after he’d already installed it, otherwise I would have told him not to.

Reading the groups some say it’s just completely incompatible due to TADO not supporting a new EMS tech the 8000 uses.
Other posts suggest it can be wired up but with relay only.

Can it be wired up?

I read some posts suggesting that this would force the boiler not to modulate and will run at 40kw at all times. That seems technically impossible. The boiler would still modulate whilst on, but would ultimately be turned off if the TADO felt it no longer needed heat?

If we can wire this up, it seems we lose the ability for the controls to modulate the boiler, and that maybe a little less efficient, but in terms of functionality, it should be basically the same?

Rooms will be heated independently, the boiler can be turned on and off by the TADO, and we lose the functionality of the thermostat being able to modulate.

Anything else I'm missing?

  • It will definitely be possible to wire it via relay. I would check with Tado directly to see if they support it on ebus or Opentherm.
  • According to Tado they don't support the EMS 2 that Bosch use in their new boilers, which appears to the root of the issue.
  • In that case you will only be able to wire it via relay. Tado will simulate modulation, and the maximum flow temp will stay at whatever you set it to. Those are the main differences.
  • Thanks Jonny. Would the max flow temp be set on the boiler itself?

One option that was just suggested to me, was to get a Bosch control thermostat and let that modulate the boiler, and use the Tado as room control.

This seems a reasonable option, but my only concern would be, if the Tado wanted heat, but the Bosch controls had turned the boiler right down.
  • You would set the max flow temp on the boiler. Tbh unless you’re desperate to use Tado you might be better off with a weather compensation system.
