Dual zone heating and hotwater

Hi all, I am looking at installing Tado into a dual zone heating system with a hot water cylinder.

From the site I've read that I need a wired starter kit and an extra wired thermostat but this doesn't give me the ability to control the hot water, all it does is essential replace the wired dumb thermostats with ones that can be controlled via an app.

On the back of our current hot water / heating timer clock there are 5 wires

Common Live
Common Neutral
Switch live for heating zone 1
Switched live for heating zone 2
Switched live for hot water

Ive checked and even on the wireless starter kit that is able to replace the hot water / heating timer clock ot only have provisions for 1 heating zone and a hot water connector, it lacks the 2nd heating zone connections.

Anyone know if Tado can control 2 heating zones independently and also integrate with hot water control?

TIA

  • Hi Ivan, I have the same issue and Tado tell me I cannot have 2 CH zones and HW. The system will only control 1 CH and HW. My plumber has suggested leaving the downstairs valve permanently on, this will result in a one zone CH system and then I can use the Tado system. That is my intention to get around the issue, as well as buying 16 smart TRVs

  • You cannot replace a 3 zone controller as a DIY install because the Tado controller only controls 2 zones. You have 3 options:

    1) Install wired thermostats only and leave the existing controller to manage the HW.

    2) Install Tado's 2 zone controller, but join the wires for CH 1 and CH2 together, so you are reduced to a single heating zone. You can re-zone the system using smart TRVs.

    3) Employ a plumber/electrician to re-wire the heating system. Removing the existing 3 zone controller and replacing with the Tado 2 zone wireless receiver. Plus a wired thermostat for the second CH zone.

    1 & 2 are DIY options.

  • UPDATE

My plumber has decided that leaving the downstairs valve permanently on is not the way to go.

I am going with option 2 that GrilledCheese2 has mentioned above.

This just seems a really simple solution.

    Cheers

    Hi.

I have a similar setup, two zones plus hot water.

I need to keep two separate heating zones and they need to be wireless thermostats that I can move from their current positions. I don’t mind leaving hot water on its current programmer if necessary.

Do I need one wireless starter kit PLUS a wired add on thermostat and wireless temperature sensor? I can then use the wireless thermostat for one zone and the wired thermostat and wireless temperature sensor for the other? Or I could get two wired thermostats and two wireless temperature sensors and place the sensors in the rooms (and set Tado to ignore the thermostats in the stairwell).

@RichieJ wireless starter kit is dual channel for a hot water zone (cylinder). Two wired isn’t gonna do it.

@RichieJ if you don’t want hot water control via Tado, two wired thermostats to control the zone valves would probably be the simplest option plus wireless temp sensors/ trvs on rads.

If you do want Tado to control the hot water you need a wireless receiver plus additional wired thermostat plus wireless temp sensors/ trvs as required.
  • Thanks. Am happy to keep water away from Tado, at least for now. It only comes on once a day anyway.

Right, will order two wired thermostats and the temperature sensors.

Is it weird that I’m quite excited about heating controls?

Whatever gets you through the night Richie. Speaking from personal experience, maybe prepare yourself for the eventual disappointment of Tado devices unexpectedly disconnecting though. Apart from that it’s all gravy (and most Tado devices work fine 99% of the time).
