Wired Smart Thermostat with Hot Water?

Hi all,

I have a boiler that has a hot water tank. I've currently got a Nest Smart Thermostat connected to it with the HotWater component. I'm looking to switch out the entire Nest System for Tado but am not quite sure if I want the "wired" or the "wireless" thermostat - could someone assist please :)

I currently have the Nest wired in on the wall to the boiler. The Nest also connects to the WiFi and wirelessly to the hot water controller next to the hot water tank.

My questions are:

1) Do I need to get the Tado wired thermostat because I have a wired thermostat controlling the boiler?

2) In order to control the hot water - if I get a wired starter kit should I connect an Addon-WirelessReciever to it to control the hot water? Or does that require the wireless smart thermostat? Do I need to get the wireless thermostat to control the hot water?

I've read the docs and its just not clear in my mind what the answer is. For clarity what I think I'm looking to achieve is basically:

1) Tado Smart Thermostat (directly replacing the Nest Smart Thermostat)

2) Addon-WirelessReceiver (to replace the Nest hot water controller)

3) 12x SRV (because lots of radiators, doing them all)

Cheers. Joe

  • You simply need the Wireless Thermostat Starter Kit. The Wireless Receiver is a direct replacement for the Nest Heatlink. And the Wireless Temperature Sensor is a replacement for the Nest thermostat. Additionally, there is a bridge/hub that you need to plug into the back of your broadband router. You can add the smart TRVs at the same time, or add them at a later date.

  • @GrilledCheese2 - Thanks for the response. I think I understand that part (hopefully), I think what I was trying to ask is if I have the existing Nest hardwired, do I need to get the wired Tado thermostat to replace it on its wall mount connected to the same boiler connected cabling?

I believe I do, and the wired version comes with the wall mount? Then I assume I need to buy the Tado Wireless reciever to replace the Nest Heatlink (for hot water) - so the other part to the question is does the wired Tado thermostat have WiFi to connect to the Tado WirelessReceiver?

    Cheers. Joe

  • No, you don't need the wired thermostat, everything you need will be in the Wireless Thermostat Starter Kit. The Nest thermostat is wired to the Heatlink, but this is just a 12V supply to power the thermostat display. The Tado temperature sensor is battery powered and does not need any wires.

When you install Tado, you disconnect the two wires from the back of Nest thermostat, insulate them with some tape, and then press the wires into the wall. You mount the wireless temperature sensor over the top.

  • @GrilledCheese2 - ah ok thanks - so the wireless starter kit with wireless thermostat includes wall mount? I couldn't see it in the "whats in the box"? If it does then that certainly makes life easier :)

  • @GrilledCheese2 - just checked and think it comes with wall mounting, but just screws and bits, I assume I can purchase the "trim plate" seperately and just use that if I want it looking a bit more tidy :)

  • Yes, if you want a trim plate to go around the temperature sensor it will have to be purchased separately. Don't think I've ever seen it on sale with the UK outlets, so you may need to purchase it directly from Tado.

  • @GrilledCheese2 - thanks for the assistance. I'll have a think and hopefully make an order to test it out. I'm looking at the starter kit + 12 SRVs so bit nervous considering thats a serious chunk of cash. Cheers!

  • It is a lot of money for a whole system. You could purchase one or two Tado TRVs as part of a starter kit and evaluate how they work in combination with your Nest system. The TRVs won't be able to request heat, but they will limit the room temperature according to the schedule in the Tado app. The Nest system stays in place and continues to work as it does now.

Alternatively, you don't buy the TRVs now and just install the Wireless Receiver. Take a few weeks to evaluate the Tado app performance before you purchase the TRVs.
