Bizarre v3+ installation experience
Having run a v1 (beta) system for the last 10 years, I decided it was probably time to upgrade, so picked up the cheapo black v3+ in the sales.
Reluctant to commit to installing it (for fear of having to contact the mythical tech support), I'd sat on it for a couple of weeks, but decided to go for it this morning.
Really wish I hadn't.
Got the v3+ up and running, only to discover firstly, that removing the old v1 stat had bridged the switch live (should have seen that one coming, but you know, wanted to follow the instructions). Heating on constantly. No probs, isolate those wires.
Then, the wireless receiver doesn't heat the water because it's in combi mode and would only allow me to put it in system mode if I made the v3+ wireless temp sensor independent of the wireless receiver - in which case, it can't call for heat or water, but I can press the buttons on the receiver. Smart stuff this!
After reporting to tado's team of one, I realised I needed to figure this out, with snow forecast in a few days, and you know, the need to shower occasionally.
So I connected back up the v1 set up, only to discover it was still completely functional, bridge and all.
So I wired in the v1 smart thermostat (which has a built in relay) to piggy back off the connections in the V3+ receiver, and am now using the v3+ as basically a remote temperature sensor in the hallway, alongside the V1 running the hot water, and its own remote sensor in the lounge.
The outcome is actually a bonus, because I now have a second sensor (the lounge is a bit of a cold spot), which would otherwise have cost me a new remote sensor to pair with the new V3+ kit.
Of course tado will probably now act on my support request (not soon, I shouldn't think), and make my system worse than it's ended up (entirely by accident).
Got me thinking though. I know my way around heating electrics, so could sort out a workaround (took me most of the day though).
But for complete novices? How on Earth can this be so complicated??!!
