Preparing Tado for new modulating boiler

A new boiler is on the horizon which will be compatible with OpenTherm. It will be a combi boiler.

About a years ago I bought a Wireless Starter Kit V3+ and some Tado TRVs. It's all been working absolutely fine with my old boiler, really happy with it.

I now understand that the wireless receiver I have (the three buttoned version) does not have the required connections that the boiler would need to be able to modulate the heating. It's bizarre that they've done this to the UK version but hey-ho.

I've been reading through previous topics and it seems like the easiest fix is to buy the EU version of the wireless receiver to replace the UK version I have. Unfortunately it is out of stock everywhere at the moment.

Am I right in thinking this is the only piece of hardware I need to replace in order for my system to be able to modulate the new OpenTherm combi boiler? Have I missed anything?

All hardware I have currently:
1x wireless thermostat/temperature sensor.
1x wireless receiver
1x internet bridge
5x smart TRVs

Many thanks

  • You’re more or less right. There are a couple of other options though - the wired thermostat or the discontinued extension kit. If you’re getting a boiler with ebus rather than Opentherm, make sure Tado supports it.
  • Thanks for the reply.

So if I were to get the wired thermostat, can I continue using my wireless thermostat and TRVs exactly the same as I do now? Like the wired thermostat goes in the cupboard with the boiler and acts as a receiver?

And would that mean that the wired thermostat would show up on the home grid with all my other devices? Because if it's in the cupboard with the boiler I don't really want to know the temperature in there and have it triggering the heating, if that makes sense?

It seems like the EU receiver would be the cleanest solution, if I can get hold of one!
  • I’m fairly certain that it would indeed need to go in a room, but you could create one called cupboard and set the temp permanently to off so it would just be the zone controller. An eu wireless receiver or extension kit would avoid that.
  • Understood, really appreciate the help. Thanks.
  • I’m wrong. You can put the wired thermostat in any room already created that contains a Tado thermostat or Tado trv. A room can only have one measuring device so the wired thermostat would be purely a zone controller. No need to create a new room at all.
  • Okay, so if I can't get hold of an EU wirless receiver then the wired therm would essentially do the same job regarding modulation. Good to know, thank you.
  • should be easy enough to get the EU extension kit, plenty of them on ebay.

just check the model number before purchasing.

but, yes, the wired stat, would also do the same, if you can wire it to the boiler.

  • There’s no such thing as an eu extension kit. All extension kits are the same. There’s an eu wireless receiver.
  • but you can't get the extension kit in the UK (or couldn't up until very recently), thus it's an EU model?

you told me in a previous thread that i needed to get the extension kit from the EU as they weren't available in the UK

or we are both verging on the pedantic here?

  • As luck would have it, the EU wireless receiver is back in stock on the UK installers shop (and on the Irish version too) so I've ordered one of these, which I'm hoping is the right thing...?!

    Thanks again for the advice.

  • this is what i bought, but not the UK version as that didn't support opentherm/modulation

@Chenks76 you’re getting confused. The extension kit is the older discontinued model. It has digital connections. It was replaced by the wireless receiver, of which there are two versions, uk and eu. The uk version does not have digital connections; the eu version does.
  • @TheAlderman that’s the one.
