Physical button to turn on/off heating

Is there a physical button on any Tado device that turns on/off all heating i.e. the equivalent of selecting the "Turn OFF All Rooms" and "Resume Schedule All Rooms" buttons in the Tado app?

My use case is to provide guests, who do not have access to the Tado app, with a simple way to turn on and off my entire home's heating. I am often away overseas when guests stay and so it is not always convenient for me to do this for them in the app.

If not with Tado devices, are there any solutions using 3rd party hardware e.g. an IFTTT button? Are there any 3rd party solutions that can also reliably display the status of the Tado "Turn OFF All Rooms" feature to give users feedback on whether the heating is on/off and that clicking the button is having the desired effect?

@DM932187 you’re not wrong, but the question was can you use a Tado to turn off all rooms (I.e emulate the feature in the app). If you’ve got trvs installed, you can’t.

  • I'm yet to install the new V3+ I bought, but I'm pretty sure you can physically interact with it like any other room stat. You certainly can to a limited extent (on/off) on the V1 it's going to replace.

I think you probably can on the STRVs too (not that I have them), but that's of course limited to heating rooms that are not closed off by other TRVs/zone valves.

  • Thanks DM932187, do you know if you can turn on/off heating for all rooms in one go by physically interacting with a room stat?

It would be too hard for my house guests to have to turn on/off the heating for all rooms by interacting with multiple room stats and STRVs.

  • The thermostat/temp sensor only controls the target temperature of the room it’s in I’m afraid.
  • It would work in the old fashioned way:

If you have a central room stat (as opposed to TRV) them switching that on will fire the heating to the set temp on that room stat.

Whether that heat gets to all the rooms will in turn depend on the set point of any TRVs in those rooms.

  • @GrayDav4276, I believe there may be flawed understanding of my understanding, which is entirely consistent with @johnnyp78's comment

It may be simply the fact we posted at the same time, so our comments look strangely contradictory, but to be clear:

OF COURSE (!!!!) ANY temp sensor only controls the temp of the room it's in. That will then fire the boiler sending flow to all emitters that are not throttled by a TRV until the set temp in the sensor location is reached.

Or is my understanding of hydronic pipework also flawed? ;-)

  • Good point, well made @johnnyp78

OP has the answer he was seeking, and I have another reason not to buy the TRVs.😉

  • Thank you all - the answer that you have given is not with Tado hardware when you have TRVs.

I will raise a feature request. Tado are already half way there by enabling one temp sensor to turn on or off hot water: a link between the special "HOT WATER CONTROL" settings in the app and a temp sensor is automatically created on installation which gives that device an additional input mode for controlling the hot water. I would like to see this enhanced to the idea of being able to select a "master" temp sensor which gives that one device control over hot water and the ability to turn off/on all heating.

For anyone who is interested, I was able to find a workaround using 3rd party hardware. Not with a physical button as I would prefer, but I was able to create two Alexa Routines that allow guests to turn on and off all heatng with a single voice command, including the hot water. Note that it has to be using Alexa Routines as it did not work using Alexa Groups.

3rd party hardware / software will help.

@Branleigh Aqara Wireless Mini Switch. As it operates on Zigbee you'll also need a hub. E1 Hub will do the job. Matter support is coming via an over-the-air update in the following months + if you going to go further you can have a proper hardware window detection.
