Can Tado work with my house?

We have just bought a house, and I would love to install a Tado system, just not 100% it would be compatible.

We have an Ideal Vogue Max Combi 40, which is controlled by two Honeywell digital programmers. These split off into four ‘zones’. (Apologies for likely incorrect jargon- see attached photos for setup).

There are currently no thermostats in the house (seriously), and only one of the many radiators has a TVR.

I am after a Tado system for two reasons- we’re an Apple family and already have some HomeKit stuff (lights and plugs), and I want to take advantage of modulation.

Any info or advice greatly appreciated.

  • BTW- for the eagle-eyed among you, I’ve scheduled a service. The plumber performing has only ever worked with Hive, and I would prefer Tado.

  • Looks like quite a complicated set up. I don’t think it’s going to be easy without rewiring. With your current setup I think you’ll need four wired thermostats, one for each zone valve, plus Tado trvs on the rads. If you were to rewire to get rid of the zone valves you could just use a wireless receiver to the boiler and Tado trvs on the rads.
  • Would the Tado TRVs be a must? I assume so to control the different areas. I can’t imagine a world in which all the radiators in the house could make a connection to a single point anywhere in the house- we have two WiFi repeaters for our broadband and it barely covers the whole house.

If I did have to go down the multiple thermostat route- is that actually possible? Can the app, or HomeKit, support multiple thermostats?

  • Multiple thermostats are fine but it sounds like you’ll have issues connecting all the trvs to a single bridge. Unfortunately that’s a limitation you can’t get around. You could get a single temp sensor for each zone, but even then there might be connection issues.
  • Thanks, good info.

I think it would be ok to connect a temp sensor in each zone, it’s just the furthest radiators in each zone would be problematic. And as all the zones converge in the centre of the house, it might be advantageous- if they were at the outside edges, the core would likely be too hot.

Would be great if Tado would do a wireless mesh with their devices.

  • I think mesh might be coming with the next generation (whenever that is). Just to add you won’t be able to use Tado modulation in a multi zone set up. Your boiler will still have internal modulation but Tado will only be able to turn it on and off.
