What devices I need?

Dear Community,

I would like to use tado at my home but I couldn't find a similar layout in the forum, so I don't know which devices should I use or is it even possible to control my system with tado.

This is my layout (and some planned devices). I have two separate heating zones: one for the radiators and a second one for the underfloor heating. The tricky part is that there are two zone valves for the two circuits. The zone valves are near the boiler in the service room, where no temperature control is required.

What I saw was a layout with one zone valve (https://support.tado.com/en/articles/3487152-how-does-tado-control-multiroom-heating-setups-with-a-combination-of-radiators-and-water-based-underfloor-heating). As I understand the thermostat can control the valve. Is it possible to use one wireless controller for the underfloor heating (and its wireless receiver part can open the valve) and one wired thermostat which will open the valves when the smart radiator thermostats signal? If I have multiple thermostats which one should control the boiler? Can the two (or more) thermostats communicate?

Can you recommend a viable way to control this system with tado?

Thanks,

Attila

  • Do you have a separate hot water tank? If not the easiest way would be to use two wired thermostats to the zone valves, and then Tado trvs on the rads plus additional wireless temp sensor if needed.

You could also use one wireless receiver to a zone valve and one wired thermostat to the other zone valve. If you need hot water control it gets more complicated…
  • Thank You for your answer!

Fortunately I do not have a separate hot water tank, the hot water is produced by the boiler when needed.

Can you recommend documentation where I can read about the possible configuration?

I understand that I can pair a thermostat with multiple TRVs. I also understand that I can use a second wired thermostat and one wireless temp sensor for underfloor heating and pair them together.

What I don't know is whether it is possible to turn off the temperature measurement on the wired thermostat or not.

My other question is, if I have two thermostats, how can I configure that one thermostat controls the boiler and the other one is not? Or should I wire both into the boiler? Or is it possible to configure that one thermostat controls the boiler to start heating if needed, and the other one only notifies the "main" thermostat to start the boiler?

I don't find good online documentation for this, if I buy all devices, would I get the necessary documentation to configure the above situation?

    Thanks!

  • You don’t exactly ‘pair’ a Thermostat with trvs, you put it and them into a virtual room on the app that mirrors the layout of your house. So if you have a living room with two trvs and a wireless temp sensor, you create a living room on the app and put those devices in there.

Devices wired to a zone valve or boiler can act as zone controllers - they can call for heat when requested by a trv or temp sensor. In your case the wired thermostat would be zone controller for the UFH.

I don’t have a zoned house but it’s my understanding that nothing gets wired directly to the boiler - both devices get wired to their respective zone valves.

In the room where you’ve placed the wired thermostat acting as zone controller, you can set the temperature to off (assuming you don’t want it heated) and it will still pass along requests for heat for devices in other rooms linked to it as zone controller.

I don’t think there’s much documentation available but plenty of people have tried similar installations if you do a forum search.
  • Thanks again!

Maybe I just don't know the good keywords, but I was unable to find similar installations or discussions here. If you can recommend me some keywords or discussions it would be great.

What you described seems clear to me. One thing I don't understand is "nothing gets wired directly to the boiler", something should be wired there as tado will turn on the boiler to create hot water for heating, right? Or is there a separate device which should be installed and the two thermostats communicate wirelessly with that device?

Thanks! I really appreciate your help.

  • Ah no, you have a combi so Tado won’t have anything to do with hot water in a relay system. If it was wired digitally to the boiler (not possible in a zoned system) it would control the water temp and in a system boiler it’s connected to the valve which opens to allow the hot water cylinder to fill.
  • @GrilledCheese2 is far more of an expert on UFH than I am but it sounds like you have a handle on it now.
  • Sorry, I was talking about water temperature, maybe I phrased it wrong.

So I need some wiring from the thermostat to the boiler to start to boiler and control the water temp, am I right?

Both thermostats should be wired or only one?

  • You can’t set the maximum flow temperature with a relay connection - you would do this yourself on the boiler. Your Tado devices would be connected to the zone valves, which would trigger the boiler. Either one wired thermostat, one wireless receiver, or two wired thermostats.
  • Thanks!

I think I have one last question regarding the relay connection to the boiler: in my case, should both thermostats be connected to the boiler or just one?

  • You can’t connect more than one thermostat to the boiler as far as I’m aware. I think in your case the wiring centre with the zone valves is connected to the boiler and the Tado devices connect to the zone valves.
