What's the purpose of the wireless temperature sensor?

I bought a Tado wireless starter kit a couple of days ago, and have set it up with 4 individual TRVs. I have 7 radiators in my property, each in separate rooms, so that leaves 3 that are don't have a Tado TRV yet.

I am just confused about what purpose the one wireless temperature sensor I have serves? If I didn't have any individual TRVs, I understood that it would basically serve as a way to set the temperature across the entire property based on the room it was in - but what about now given I have various TRVs?

I am particularly wondering, will it still control all of the radiators, or just the one of the room its in? And do I need it at all?

Thanks!

  • The rooms with the Tado TRVs will call for heat when they want it and stop calling for heat when they dont. They measure the temp of the room they are in themselves.
The rooms with normal dumb TRVs will receive heat any time a Tado TRV calls for heat. If they get enough heat they will turn themselves off. However if they do not get enough heat they have no way of asking for more. You can put the wireless temperature sensor in the best place of your choice for rooms that do not have Tado TRVs in - possibly the hallway - and that would give you a simple control to call for heat for all the rooms with dumb TRVs at once.
An alternative use is for rooms with multiple heat sources. I have 3 rooms that each have 2 radiators with Tado TRVs and a log burning stove. The wireless temperature sensor is set as the temp measuring device for that room and both the TRVs slave to it so they open and close together. The wireless temp sensor is sat near where we sit so it can more accurately measure the temp as we feel it - especially if the log burner is lit. It would not make sense to read the room temp at the bottom of a radiator if the log burner was lit as that could lead to the radiators coming on and rapidly overheating the room.
  • Thanks so much for your response. So if I have Tado TRVs in every room, the only purpose of the wireless temperature sensor would be to get a more accurate temperature in the room it's placed - is that right? How would it know only to control the TRV in that room?

And does the wireless temperature sensor serve any other essential purpose? For example, this morning it fell of it's place on the wall and the batteries came out - and I realised that the internet bridge also disconnected automatically which meant I could no longer control any of the TRVs via the app. The internet bridge only reconnected once the temperature sensor was back on. I didn't understand why the internet bridge depended on the temperature sensor?

    Thanks again!

  • Yes you are right, if every room has Tado TRVs then it is just for accuracy in the room. In the App you assign TRVs and wireless temperature sensors to rooms. In 'devices and settings' when you click on the name of the room that has both a TRV and the wireless temperature sensor you can choose which the measuring device is for that room.
I'm not sure about why your system stopped working. Is it possible that your wireless temperature sensor is set as the zone controller rather than your wireless receive?
