Would a Wireless Receiver Help?

Hi all,

Hope you're able to shed some light. My setup is as follows: Bosch gas boiler, hydronic underfloor heating, 7 Tado wired thermostats (3 rooms on ground floor, 3 rooms on first floor, 1 room on second floor).

Setup works quite well, my only issue is that the boiler keeps firing even if no thermostat is drawing heat. I assume this is in order to maintain the temperature pre-set in the boiler for the heating circuit. Obviously, this is not very economic, and quite a concern in these times.

Would a Wireless Receiver help? I am hoping that the Wireless Receiver would instruct the boiler to fire only when a particular thermostat is requesting heat.

The instructions on Tado's website are a mess. To some extent they confirm this, but the installation instructions seem to concern only one wired thermostat, not a multiple use case.

Many thanks for your input.

  • You don't say what type of boiler you have or how long it fires up for. One possible explanation. If it's a combi (no hot water cylinder) then it probably has an eco/comfort setting for the hot water. When comfort is selected the boiler will periodically fire up to heat an internal reservoir of water. When a tap is turned on the supply of hot water will be more instantaneous with comfort switched on.

Thank you for the reply. It is indeed a combi boiler (no hot water tank), however I have disabled the comfort setting for the water. It actually takes quite a long time for hot water to reach the tap due to that.

Furthermore, the temperature when firing for hot water is much higher than the temperature for heating, so I am able to tell them apart.

This is definitely due to the boiler firing up for the heating circuit.

To also answer the duration question: it fires for maybe 20 seconds, until it reaches the pre-set temperature for the heating circuit (around 45-50 degrees currently).

Do you only have underfloor heating? If so I’m not sure what difference having a wireless receiver would make, sounds like the boiler has to keep firing to maintain a constant temperature. You could try turning off early start on the app if it’s switched on.

The other option would be to make some of your rooms independent, so they can’t call for heat but can open the valve, but I’m not sure how well the would work with UFH.
  • Indeed, only underfloor heating throughout. My hope was that by installing the Wireless Receiver, it would instruct the boiler to fire ONLY when a zone is drawing heat.

  • For 7 zones I imagine you must have a distribution manifold that is connected to a wiring centre. Most UFH wiring centres have a block of LEDs to indicate which thermostat/zone is calling for heat, heat request made to boiler, pump status, valve status etc. Do you have a status panel for the UFH? If so, what LEDs are illuminated when the boiler fires up, but nothing should be calling for heat?

  • You are quite right. There is one of these on each floor. There is however no display, unfortunately. The box only has a green led on to show that is has power and a red led to show that it draws heat. That's it, though.

Maybe it's expected behavior. But in my mind, a truly smart system would instruct the boiler not to fire unless truly necessary.

Thanks again to all for your kind assistance. Was really hoping a Wireless Receiver would do the trick.

  • It's a shame you don't have any status indicators. If your thermostats were wireless then there could be anomalies due to loss of communication, but the wired thermostats don't normally cause problems. So I'm of the view that the Tado system is not your problem.

Two things you could do to prove this. The first is to power down the Tado bridge/hub. This will stop all communication from the app and cloud servers. If the boiler is still firing up, then the second step is to remove the batteries from all the Tado thermostats. This will isolate your heating system entirely from Tado. If your boiler stops firing up, then Tado is likely to be the cause of your problem. However, if your boiler continues to fire up then Tado is unlikely to be the problem.
