Can I install the wireless receiver in place of a current wired thermostat?

I want to move a current thermostat (E91.713) from it's current location to another room.

Can I install a Tado wireless receiver at this location to act as a switch to turn on and off the zone or can it only be installed at the boiler?

My house has an air to water system and I don't want to change the setup of the downstairs underfloor heating or the hot water.

I just want to move the thermostat that controls the upstairs radiators because the thermostat is wired in the warmest bedroom. This means the upstairs heating isnt warming the other bedrooms because the temperature has already been reached where the thermostat is currently located.

The wireless receiver requires a Neutral wire, as it is not battery powered. Your Wunda thermostat is mains powered, so you should be able to replace it with the Receiver without needing any re-wiring.

  • My wunda thermostat uses 3 wires. Blue and brown in the far right two terminals.I presume these are for power.
The third wire is a brown into the 4th terminal from the right I presume this controls the relay. How would I wire the Tado receiver into this configuration?
  • If the wire on the 4th terminal is the Switched Live for the relay, then you would connect it to CH NO on the receiver. There's a short wire that comes with the receiver that you connect between Live and CH COM. The receiver will make and break the electrical circuit between CH COM and CH NO. And obviously you connect the power wires to Live and Neutral.

  • Thanks for that explanation. So you think I will be able to replace my upstairs thermostat with a Tado receiver and I can then use a wireless thermostat in one of the colder rooms.
  • Yes, based on the information you've provided it should work.

You could also try balancing the radiators. Each radiator will have a lock shield valve that controls how much hot water flows through the radiator. It's at the opposite end to the TRV and there's usually a plastic cap that prevents the lock shield from being adjusted.

If you remove the plastic cap you can use a small spanner to make adjustments. In the bedroom that is too warm try closing (turn clockwise) the lock shield by half a turn. And in the colder rooms try opening (turn anti-clockwise) the lock shield by half a turn. Wait a few hours before you make a judgement on whether the room temperatures are more balanced.
  • When you say "There's a short wire that comes with the receiver that you connect between Live and CH COM. The receiver will make and break the electrical circuit between CH COM and CH NO."

Is it the switches live or the power live I bridge with CH COM?
  • As @GrilledCheese2 says you are bridging the power live to the CH COM.
  • Well my little experiment failed. I purchased the wireless sensor starter kit. Followed the instructions and wired as suggested above. The heating light would come on on the wireless receiver when called by the thermostat or the app but the radiators dis not warm up. Maybe it's just not compatible or are there any other wiring suggestions that might work?
  • This may help you with the upstairs heating problem.

  • @User2022 can you post a photo of the wiring for the wireless receiver.

  • The wiring connections look like what I would expect to see. Two things I can think of. Can you hear a relay clicking inside the receiver when you turn the heating on/off. Secondly I cannot see any bare copper wire on the purple bridge wire. The wires are probably just close to the terminal, but check the purple insulation is not trapped under the terminal clamp.

  • Yeah I hear it click and the light comes on.
It's an air to water system with low heat radiators maybe I just couldn't feel the heat? I put back my old thermostat for now.
  • Did you delete tour tado devices and re-pair them?
