Don't know if change the thermostat can help.

My home is using a conventional boiler which provide central heating as well as connecting to a water tank for hot water.

A honeywell programmer is next to the water tank cupboard, then the wireless receiver. The Honeywell wireless thermostat is in the lounge. The bathroom have a towel rail (full flow without TRV, and all other radiators (including the hallway) in the house have Tado smart radiator TRVs.

Normally, our family do not need central heating except 4-6pm for bath.

I noticed that If I set the target temp of thermostat in the lounge too low, let say, 19 deg C. Before reaching the target, the towel rail in the bathroom and the radiator in the lounge (no TRV ) will become hot. However, once the lounge reaches the 19 deg C, the whole central heating system will pause.

Therefore, If I want to keep hot water running through the bathroom, i have to set the target temp of the thermostat to a very high one, e.g. 25 deg C. However, the downside will be the unnecessary high temp in the lounge.

My question is what can I upgrade in order to keep the bathroom hot enough for shower and changing clothes while keep the lounge as well as all other areas in my house cool enough to save energy??

Thank you.

The easiest way to deal with it would be to put a Tado trv in the lounge. Then it wouldn’t need to shut the boiler off when it reached target temperature.
  • Thank you for your comment. Sorry that I relocated from tropical area, hence no concept on central heating.

If I out a Tado TRV in the lounge, that means only the towel rail in the bathroom is the one without TRV. If I set the lounge and other TRVs to a very low temp, e.g,. 13 deg C. , which trigger the boiler and the system to pump hot water to the towel rail in bathroom?? The OLD honeywell wireless thermostat in the lounge (which set to 25 deg) ??

    Thank you

  • Whenever your heating comes on, the towel rail will heat up. If you set your target temperature to 13c it’s unlikely to come on unless your house is very cold.
  • Please correct me if I am wrong:

If I put a tado TRV in the lounge (that is only the towel rail without TRV and full flow when the heating comes on)

Then what is the function of the previous wireless thermostat in the lounge? how should I set it? and you means the only way that my bathroom will not getting hotter and hotter is I switch off the heating via the 7 days 3 ways controller ?

  • I don’t know what the “7 days three ways’l controller is but if you mean it’s a three channel controller you won’t be able to install Tado without rewiring anyway, it doesn’t support them.

The wireless thermostat remains the measuring device for the room, but the trv controls the flow to the radiator. Unless there’s a trv (either Tado or dumb) fitted to the towel rail, then yes it will get hot every time the heating comes on. There’s usually a valve on it somewhere to turn it down if it’s getting too hot.
