Can TRVs control the boiler?

Hi, I’ve got 14 TRV zones, 2 underfloor heating zones, a hot water tank and a main thermostat which are all Tado controlled. Main thermostat is in the hall and if it reaches temperature the boiler switches off irrespective of whether the zones have hit temperature. Alternatively I can set the main thermostat so high it doesn’t hit temperature so zones can be heated as needed, but then the boiler runs constantly. Is there a way to effectively remove the main thermostat from the system so the boiler kicks in when a zone requires heating and a TRV opens?

You need to set the trvs to call for heat. Go to settings > rooms and devices > click on room and you should see a zone controller option. That’s the device connected to the boiler that the trvs communicate with to tell it to turn the boiler on.

Is the main thermostat wired to the boiler? It sounds like you have a large house it may have zone valves too?

  • I had the same question and couldn't find an answer. I'm a new install. I've set the WTS to "off" so it doesn't control anything it just gives me an independent temp reading for the room which has a tado TRV. Hope this helps.

What’s the zone controller for the trvs? Are they able to call for heat? It sounds like at the moment only the thermostat is.

Pip, not sure why you don’t want your wireless temperature sensor to call for heat? If it’s put in the same room on the app as the Tado trv it should give you a more accurate reading.
  • Not sure what you mean by zone controller. It seems like they don’t call to the boiler. The Honeywell DT90 thermostat replaced by Tado connected to the boiler appears to be the on/off control for the boiler and then the radiators can make use of that heat.
  • Hi Johnnyp78, thanks for the reply. Took me a while to find he calll for heat function and then a little longer to test. Seems it should work, which is great, but it doesn’t. 🙈 Going to have to trouble shoot. I’m on the old extension kit, which may not help. Thanks though. 👍🏻
  • It could be an issue with the relays in the extension kit in that case, or the firmware - I think you’re going to have to try Tado support and see if they can find any issues with it.
  • Thanks again. I’ll give them a try.
