Conflicting issues with tado skyQ/

So I have 2 tado thermostats (2zones)
And I have skyQ tv with 2 additional mini boxes.

When I’m watching a sky mini box. And the thermostat clicks on/off. The tv goes black. For about 20 seconds. Cutting the programs. And if watching Netflix on sky. I loose signal to the program.

It’s 100% everytime the thermostat clicks.

Is this common? Anyone else?
Any fix?
Should tado look into this?

Not sure if it’s the wifi it’s effecting (as sky q transmits through the household wifi) or the tv. Or the box. Or wiring?
I have a new build house.

@Danny37 Possible radio interference problems between your skyQ & tado°

Does this issue also appear when settings are changed via manual control?

  • If it's radio interference, I'm not sure if Tado can resolve as long as their hardware conforms to the 6LoWPAN radio specification.

This could well be an issue with the Sky service. Have you tried the Sky forums too?

  • Some thoughts on the issue:

From a radio transmission perspective Tado won’t interfere with the home WiFi. Totally different set of frequencies and transmission power of Tado devices is very low.

Do you use power line adapters where you plug devices into power sockets to get the broadband to other rooms in the home? These are notoriously susceptible to electrical noise.

The clicking noise you hear from the thermostat is the relay switching on and off. It may not be the relay at fault, but other electrical items that are energised. When the heating starts up motorised valves will turn on, the circulator pump will run and there’s also the boiler ignition to light the gas. The ignition is a spark of electricity that will generate noise if not properly suppressed.

Unfortunately for you finding the source of noise problems can be quite a challenge. You may need to trial things before you work out what really is at fault.

  • I have SkyQ and don't suffer with this issue. Does the issue only happen on the skyQ mini? What if you move the mini to another room and plug it in.

It does sound like some kind of electrical interference. Unrelated, but I have a bean to cup coffee machine, and every time it grinds the beans it interferes with terrestrial tv signal (ariel) in the kitchen. Soon as the grinding stops the picture goes back to normal.

  • Thanks for the input.

So no to power line adapters.

The “click” is nothing to do with the boiler at all. (I’m a gas engineer)
The thermostat is in my bedroom. The skyq mini box/smart tv is in my bedroom. The combi boiler is on the kitchen on mid floor. Tado bridge and 1st thermostat is on the ground floor.

The “click” is a sound the thermostat makes when the temperature drops below the set level and activates.

I would say 3/5 activations cut out the picture on the skyq mini box.
  • From memory, your sky mini box is connected via a dedicated sky wifi network broadcasting from the main skyQ box. Does anything happen to the picture on the main skyQ box when the thermostat clicks on/off?

Do you notice any other devices (like your mobile phone) drop off your main wifi at the same time?

If you're losing connection to netflix on the sky mini this does suggest that there is an interruption on wifi.

Might be a pain but you could try connecting the mini box to the main SkyQ box (if don't have sky broadband) via RJ45 or to your home router (if you have sky broadband) - this would eliminate an issue with wifi and if it's still occurring point to something electrical. But it can't be the mini losing power as it'd take more than 20 seconds to reboot.

You also mention you have two mini boxes, does this happen on both?

  • It happens to the mini box in the same room as the thermostat. And only that device. It interrupts sky channels. And Netflix. But probably Netflix more. (Netflix app on the sky box)
It also used to interrupt my old fire stick in the same way. On my previous tv (in the same room)

So proximity must be an issue.
  • @Danny37 Are you saying that when the thermostat in the bedroom “clicks” the sky mini box in the bedroom is not working for 20 secs, but at the same time your other sky mini box works?

If both do not work at the same time proximity is not the issue. If a thermostat clicks it connects to the internet bridge and it might affect the skyQ box in some way, and therefor no connection to both sky mini boxes.

  • So a little update. As it just happened again

I’m watching 1 mini box. In bedroom. That has the thermostat

On the mini box I’m watching Netflix app that’s installed in the sky box.
At the exact second the thermostat “click” for temp the screen goes black. And I get error screen saying
“We’re having trouble playing this tittle at the moment, please try again later or select a different tittle”

It’s exactly the same time. As far as I know it’s only this box that’s 3m away from the thermostat that’s effected.

It ONLY does this on a thermostat click. Never any other time. Never without a click. But not to every click.

    Error code
    Tvq-on-101(5.2.15)

Which I’m assuming simply refers to “network” issue.

So it’s either internet supply cutting out. Or the wifi signal the mini box uses that interrupted.

I’m going to hazard a guess at wifi signal over internet as my phones on wifi continuous. And sky programs cut that are not using the internet.

So somehow. The tado thermostat. Interrupts the internal house wifi that makes my mini box connect to the main box.

So any suggestions on how? Or how to stop it?
    It’s extremely annoying.
  • Sorry I missed a couple of questions before.

No sky broadband. My internet is different. I have a fibre to the home network from a company you will never of heard of.

I don’t use the ISP router. I use TP-LINK DECO5 x3 1 as a router the other 2 as extenders. Wired so I have wifi on each floor. (3 floors)

@Danny37 Have a butchers at the following link - it may help? https://techisours.com/tvq-pb-101/

  • @Danny37 It appears that the Sky mini boxes are using channel 36 on 5GHz. Might be worth using a WiFi analyser app to check if other devices nearby are using the same channel and their relative signal strength. Article here gives details. https://www.trustedreviews.com/how-to/fix-sky-q-connectivity-problems-4099650

  • @Danny37 You need to ensure that IGMP snooping is enabled from the web user interface of all the Deco m5 debices. Login on the Deco, then Advanced, System, System parameters. If IGMP snooping is not enabled it might overwhelm the Tado Bridge and cause the issue you have.

  • @Danny37 If your ISP is not sky, then I'm pretty sure your mini boxes are connecting over a hidden SSID broadcasted from your main SkyQ box (mesh) and not using your main home wifi. Are you able to run a temporary CAT5 cable from the main skyQ box to the mini to rule out wifi interference?

  • My understanding (direct from sky) is I can’t use Ethernet on sky q because I have 2 mini boxes. I know this because the reason I have 3 decos is because the ISP router couldn’t a transmit wifi past my 1st floor. Which was useless in a 3 story house.

Re the deco settings advice. I got into advanced.. there is no “system” or “parameters” or “IGMP” settings to select.

I literally only have a few settings.
Wish I could post a picture of the options
