Multi zone nest replacement

I’m hoping someone can help here as tado support suggest what I want to do isn’t possible but other threads on here suggest it should be.

- I currently have a nest setup with three zones, on per floor.
- All the heat links for the nest thermostats are in the garage next to the boiler and hot water cylinder.
- The ground floor heat link also controls the hot water
- I have just installed tado TRVs on all radiators and wish for each room to be able to individually call for heat.
- I think I need one wireless thermostat with control unit to replace the ground floor zone and then two wired thermostats to replace the 1st and 2nd zones.

My questions are thus

1) will this work?
2) Can I just set tado to ignore the temperatures on the wired thermostats and use them as “dumb” control boxes for the TRVs? If not how does this work with the thermostats being in the garage?
3) does anyone have any experience of a similar setup who can confirm it works as expected?

  • Did you manage to get anywhere with this? I have almost the same question.
  • Sorry for the delay @alephzero. I didn’t get anywhere but I’ve ended up buying the following to see if I can get it working

1 x Starter kit for wireless thermostat with extension
    2 x wired thermostat

I have a vaillant boiler and have just been reading about the ebus with modulation controls. Might need to do more reading on that to see if I can take advantage of it but for now I’m going to try to map the wiring from each heat link to the items as mentioned in my original post then contact customer service to have three zones set up. I’ll ensure the TRVs are used to request for heat and add all three thermostats to three separate rooms which will always be set to frost protection so they never call for heat directly
  • That's ok - thanks for replying. I had one nest with heat link controlling upper floor heating zone and hot water, and a second nest with heat link controlling lower floor heating zone. I got in contact tado support and they said I could replace one but not both. So I've replaced the first one with tado wireless thermostat. The devices all seem to be getting on fine and call for heat works for both tado and nest. I probably won't try to replace the other nest, as it was mainly on the upper floor where I wanted to use tado thermostats to control rooms individually, although tado support thought it would be possible if I got a heating engineer out.
